91 crx rack and pinion replacement
hey guys, Was looking to replace my rack and pinion since i did my b16 swap. I had a wheel alignment done since i felt play in the steering wheel from side to side. After alignment i still have the steering wheel free play side to side. It does make a noise when i sometimes turn side to side. I can not locate a rebuilt rack and pinion online. I thought one time i saw RYWIRE sold a quick steer rack and pinion on there site but its not there and more. Any suggestions on where to find one????

I'm assuming you have a manual rack as I don't know of any CRX's that had power. If you have a non-Si you can swap out your rack and pinion gears for Quaife's Quick Ratio Steering Rack. It's ~240 before shipping from King Motorsports and its a great upgrade.

i would just get a stock rack but everyone i call only has a power rack. Makes no sense since crx doesn't have power steering....even online can't find rebuilt rack non power!!

Re: 91 crx rack and pinion replacement (alscrx)
i have yet to find a manual rack replacement.
the thing is that on a manual rack, other than the tie rods, there are only 2 possible parts that can be "rebuilt", the rack end bushing and the pinion bearing.
the rack end bushing is what needs to be replaced to get good steering feel again. and also the gearbox needs adjustment. you can read all about it and how to take the rack out in here.

btw, the quaife quick steering rack only comes with the actual rack and pinion. you need to take apart the housing anyway. plus, it requires a DX steering rack, not an Si rack.

Are you sure it isn't just the rack end bushing? These manual racks RARELY need replacing. Just and FYI. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by alscrx »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Makes no sense since crx doesn't have power steering....</TD></TR></TABLE>
Because they are so light you don't need it not to mention the drag on the motor just be happy it doesn't have it.

he means it makes no sense why they even sell a "power" rack when the CRX doesnt have power steering.

I guess I didn't read it that way.
Why is the Si not used with Quaife?

Re: 91 crx rack and pinion replacement (Tyson)
Yup thats what i meant .....cause every CRX is made manual steering.
Honestly after my swap i replaced inner and outer tie rods. I did take out the gearbox adjustment nut and spring cause i didn't know what it was.
So after i assembled everything and got the b16 running good i had free play in the wheel side to side. I went under and adjusted the gearbox nut, free play is gone but steering does not feel the same. Maybe something else got messed up. I know how my crx handled before.. and it handles worse now.
Since i have an HF the quaife quick steering rack is supposed to fit. Since it comes with pinion assembly are there still parts i need to rebuild the rack besides the rack end bushing???

Re: 91 crx rack and pinion replacement (alscrx)
im not sure if quaife will provide the pinion bearing with their pinion. but really, theres nothing more to rebuild on a rack, other than the tie rod boots i guess. the manual steering rack is that simple.
the Si and DX/HF rack housings are different. quaife used the DX rack to make their quick steering rack. the pinion wont interface completely if the quaife rack is used in the Si housing.
if you didnt replace the rack end bushing, then it needs to be replaced. its just a $10 piece.
what do you mean you just took out the adjustment nut and spring??? i found that adjusting that spring is simply trial and error until you get the right feel you want.

Well i didn't know what that big nut was for so i removed it and put it back in. I do not have more free play but its just hard to explain. I guess i will just rebuild it myself.

Yes greased rack. Well it seams as though the turns and corning are not as sharp as they used to be. Weird cause everything in suspension is new!
Well if i am going around a right bend on freeway, it seems as though the car goes into the other lane while i have the wheel turned. Maybe the correct phrase is that it doesn react quick at all

Re: 91 crx rack and pinion replacement (Tyson)
I had it done first day after i replaced everything,.,,
I did upper control arms, tokico full suspensions kit, bushings on lower control arm, etd traction bar, new ball joints. The entire front end was redone when i dropped my b16 in. So i think i should rebuild the rack....

Some people see it, but I personally don't. With a brand new set of RT615s, steering is even easier than it was this summer to the point I can turn no problem with one hand.
