Icon2 91 civic dx, hard to start after it sits for 24hrs

My civic started acting up on me last week. One morning it turned over like normal but wouldn't fire up. I floored the petal andgot it to start. but It stutter kinda like It was flooded. I could smell the fuel. it remind me of an old 60's pickup starting in the cold. It ran fine all day. I had no more starting issue. but that last couple days it came back. Now it's every day. The first start of the day, I have trouble startig it. It cranks over great, a little fast but i sounds good. once I release the key from the starting position it fires, well it bogs and if I give i a little gas it will run. Again it smells flooded. I turn it off then try and start it again. It fires right up. I let it sit for a few hour and try again. It fies up. But if it sits over night, I have the problem again. Has anyone had this problem before?

It happen again this morning. I can get it to start after I turn the key off and on a few times. But it stutters for amin, kinda like it's flooded. I turned it off ,then tired again. It fired right up. I drove to work (45 min drive) with no issues. Once I got to work I tired again. Started right up. there is no stutter, or anything. Anyone have any ideas?? Is this a fuel problem?

im having almost the same problem out of my b20 vtec but what mine will do is it will start over and over one day then the next morning i go out to start it, and it wont start but it will turn over, and im not sure what it is ive replaced the main relay and the fuel filter and the pump I even bypassed the main relay to feed direct power to the fuel pump from the battery via toggle switch i have also replaced the distributor and the plugs but I have good spark so im at a loss for words or ideas right now so you should PM me if you figure out your problem, and ill do the same for you

Will do. I thinking of having my battery tested. I left my lights on ovr night about 2 weeks ago I completey drained it. I know this is grasping for straws but I really don't know what else it could be. It started up fine at work or lunch and for th way home. I'm going to start it tonight before I go to bed. I want to see if there's a pattern with time or temp.

It's possible that you have a faulty fuel pressure regulator that is loosing fuel pressure when it sits for an extended period of time. After your car sits overnight try priming the pump twice and then turn it over. I would suggest renting a fuel pressure testing kit from your local auto parts store to further diagnose the problem!

Here is a little information on how to check the fuel pressure.

Haynes Manuals also explain how to do this in pretty good detail.

Well, it started up fine this morning. I went out at 9pm and started it last night before bed. I let it run for a minute. This morning it started right up. I did change the grade of gas I have been using. I put in the 89 octane instead of the 87. I doubt that has anything to do wih it, but it is th only thing I've changed. If it was fuel pressure wouldn't I feel it as I drove?

Well, it's always best to use the gasoline type that is recommended for your vehicle's compression ratio, but I don't believe it would have an affect like that.

It's hard to put one symptom to a fuel pressure problem. Sometimes they will cause driving problems and other times they will just cause starting problems.

in my opinion, the reserved fuel wasnt there enough for start up but after the pump provided enough, it will be run fine .
there is might be the reservation/lines leaking could impact..
still working on mine (:

this morning it did it again. On the second attempt I turn the key over one click, enough to start the dash lights on. After the cel light went out I turned over the engine. It fired right up.

I'm going to rent a pressure gauge to check the fuel pressure. How hard is it to change out the fuel pump on a 91 honda civic dx. My car is the calif. exempt. No EGR.

Checking the fuel pressure will be the best and easiest thing to do first. Hopefully it's a bad fuel pressure regulator! If the fuel pump is bad, then I believe you'll have to drop the tank to replace it. I have a 90 dx hatch and my fuel pump went out on me recently. Planning on replacing it this weekend. I'll let you know if I run into anything too difficult.
