My buddy's 1990 1.5L car just lost the timing belt. About 3-4" worth of teeth stripped right off the belt.

Is there any chance whatsoever that he doesn't have valve damage? Is it 100% certain?

Just put a belt on and do ur comp and leak down test. Either itll work or it wont lol. I have a b16 in my car now that broke the timing belt on the previous owner. He was positive it was trashed so i got it for nothing. Needless to say a 30 something dollar gates timing belt and bout n hour of time and now im rippn the streets in a b16a swapped ed sedan!! Of course he was all pissed off when i screamed past him with his old swap lol. Best 30 some dollars ive ever spent on my honda. Good luck with your motor.

Part of the reason I'm asking is because we're stuck right now on it. We can't get the crank bolt off. It's on stupid tight. If damage was a 100% scenario then we might just skip this and go straight for a new rebuilt long block.

But that makes it seem like there may be a chance it didn't destroy the valves. Hmm..

Honda states that the D15B2 engine is invasive. My 91 crx engine broke a belt. Shops wanted $$$ hundreds to remove head 'to take a look'. I bought a belt for $18 at Autozone. Installed the new belt and evidently no bent valves, engine runs fine. But stupid me, I should have also replaced the water pump. It went bad a few thousand miles later and had to do the job again.

Crank bolts are a real bad word sometimes. Did u rent the tool (autozone) to hold the pully while you tried to break the bolt loose? If not i would recomend trying that. I can honestly say that i never used that tool but know ppl that have and it makes it fairly easy. I have always used an impact and just hammered away at it in forward and reverse and they allways came off. Good luck.

It's the 88-91 version with the holes and doesn't have the hex shaped opening to apply that tool. So yah it's a pita. I can't believe it is that hard to get this thing off my IR impact spun the crank bolt off no problem on a 4.6 v8 but it can't even budge the bolt on this car.

We've got a few ideas to try with the torch and bumping it with the starter as a last resort. It shouldn't take hours to get the crank bolt off a car. :/

Crank bolt is such a hastle sometimes. Stick a screw driver in the flywheel, thatll prevent the crank from rotating.

I've had my fair share of problems with the crank bolt. Spray some penetrating behind the pulley the best you can and let it sit overnight.

It also helps to have the car on the ground and in gear. Just turn the steering wheel full lock to the left. There should be a rubber plug in the inner fender plastic right where the bolt is (but you probably removed that bit of plastic). An extension and a breaker bar with steady force should be able to take it right out.

How do you get at the bolt with the wheel on the car and the mud flap attached? Anyway, That bolt is torqued at 119 lbs. First time I tried to get it off, I put a 3 foot pipe on a breaker bar and couldn't get it off. Stuck a screwdriver through the crank pulley to hold the engine from turning. Bent the screwdriver Had to borrow a 1/2" drive impact and it took a few attempts. Socket got really hot. I don't know which is more of a pita, that bolt or the CV shaft bolt.

Glowicki is correct no need to remove the tire. I use a dewalt 18volt cordless impact for everything i do on hondas and it has not failed me yet!! Crank bolts and axle nuts dont stand a chance with this thing lol it does better than my air impact. Before i had that tho i was breakn 1/2" breaker bars all the time lol. Good luck. I don't have a fancy dewalt impact wrench (I wish I did), but I do have an autozone one. It's okay, but it gets the job done when when needed.
