alright, if i am reading your post correctly, the question is about the number of splines for the end that goes in to the transmission on the 88 hf vs other years and models? and then also the number of splines going into the wheel hub for the 88 hf also?

if so, the answer is that the transmissions 88-91 all use the same number of splines and diameter, so any 88-91 axle will work on the transmission side. The caveat is that the hf has a different spline count/diameter at the wheel hub, so the correct answer to your question is that only 88 hf axles will work for you. if you get the HF axles though, you can still use any transmission you want, because the transmission side is the same on all of the transmissions.

If you wanted to change your wheel hubs, then you will be able to use any driveshafts except the hf ones, so the number of choices you have is larger.

THANKS A bunch if i could rep you i would, great.

I know its easier to find 89-91 than 88 but i dont have the money or want to spend it for that.

So i have to get hf 1988 axles but everything on the trans side is good(ie si, dx, hf etc is fine)

I can use any flywheel and clucth or do i have to use the 88 since the trans and the 190mm disc for the hf vs the 200-220 for the later years?>

Dont matter about the half shaft correct?

Whats the mpg difference between the hf and si?

You have to use the 88 clutch disc with an 88 tranny. The flywheels are all the same
