get a second gen.

it may be lighter but other things like how much harder a b-series swap is and i'm sure engine bay is also smaller would make me get a second gen. not to mention i think they are carburated so you will have fun with switching over to fuel injection

The SI is fuel injected, so make sure it is an SI. Hasport makes mounts to put a B-series in it. I dont know about wiring though.

I always liked 1st gen CRX. They can be made to go fast just like any other honda... a little bit difficult finding aftermarket parts compared to 88 and up, though. And the "scene" for them is smaller. They also get very good mileage. If you can get an SI, then it might be worth it. Otherwise, think dependable, cheap transportation and pay accordingly.

One of the most fuel efficient cars Honda ever made. Are you talking about a 1st generation HF? The second gen HF could get over 40 mpg easy, and I've heard people claim to get over 50mpg sometimes.

Biggest con is the solid beam rear axle.

you would think the solid rear would handle worse than the IRS on the 2nd gen

but i have a 87 Hatch Si and a 2g CRX and the Hatch would run circles around the crx

i love my 3g Hatch

all above is true, there is less aftermarket parts, but still plenty available, and the scene is way smaller, but lots of great people

i love the way the 1g's look, and they are light as hell

if you havent been around cars alot and worked on them, i would suggest getting a Si less carb crap to expletive with if you wanted to swap, but if youve done swaps and are a comptent mechanic a carb to fuel injection swap is pretty eazy, few parts from a si and some wiring

and deffinatly check out Redpepperracing.com if your realy interested, lots of info on there

This is my old 87 Civic Si hatch w/ B20BVTEC.

Id say go for it. But it takes a certain enthusiest to really appreciate such a unique car!

Like as has been previously said, if you get an 87, make sure it is a SI. THe HF had a 65 HP carb'd engine, the SI has a 95 HP fuel injection.

Is this for a daily driver car? The issues with 1st generation CRX's (84-87) can be misleading, for example, is it a trackable car, yes, and no. Yes, but you have to work at it because of the (as stated before) rear beam axle, plus instead of springs on the front, they used torsion bars. Now if this is to be a track car, you'll have issues to deal with the suspension. Not user friendly. The difference between HF & SI are wide and many, the axles, knuckle, the rotors, etc. on front will need to be change because since it is an economy car(HF), they use both light weight mateials and smaller sus, parts.

It is easier to swap motors into a 2nd gen, CRX (88-91) and it has 4 wheel independant suspension and IIRC suspension is totally different in that it is alot lighter materials, Fuel tank in all SI's are designed to work with fuel injections, but not the HF. Wiring can be the pits if you do a swap, you'll need wiring, front suspension, ECU, and sometimes the radiator for a larger engine. The steering rack is slower than the HF by about 1/4 turn from lock to lock. Yes, the shifter will also need to be changed if doing a swap.

There are other issues, but I can't keep my eyes open any longer,

BTW, these front fenders on the 87 are in fact plastic, If you make contact with someone or an immovable object, they'll just shatter into a gazillion pieces. DAMHIKT.

HTH

http://www.redpepperracing.com has a bunch of info on first gen rex's and 3rd gen civic's. I was thinking about getting one because i love sleepers. Hasport does make the b series swap mounts too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
My '87 HF was easily the best handling car I've ever owned (out of about 5 pre-92 Hondas)....and it was probably the best handling car I've ever ridden in, no joke.
Slow as *****, but so much fun on the backroads.

Then get the HF. An intake is not going to be easy since the air filter is on top of the carburetor, but do what you want.

1G is the shitzz, 85+ si have mpfi but 84-87 dx/hf have carb.
CHEAP MODS throw a 87-89 integra dohc d16 (bolt on), I/E/H and you can run low 14's cost about $500 or less

I concur with this thinking. Why? I've got two 87's one 87 SI and a HF. Si was damaged hard in a T-bone to my front. THe Si is the donor car for parts to do the swap with the SI engine going in. Cheap? heck yes, it's a track car so interior is completely gutted and everything is stripped down to the skin. Literally, just about skin and bones (cage). I run a 1/2 mile 30* high bank asphalt, was a hoot load of fun.

Yep, one can work diligently and get these to REALLY go fast and not continue the understeer problem associated with torsion bars and rear beam axled cars with all ( + %) the weight forward.

Get her, and you'll have fun.

Enjoy

Well, I dunno about all the 1st Gen and HF crap going on but I hope I can answer what it was you originally wanted to know. Hopes this bit helps even a lil bit.

Nice lil 2 seater car. Best used if you're a solo driver with a casual passenger, but sucks if you have others who want to ride with ya.

Can't say I like the steering column all that much as its not adjustable, its literally locked in one position, especially a problem if you're a big sized person.

A nice plus would be the compartment area behind the seats. Being a stereo fanatic that I am, I've managed to crunch in 1.5 farad cap and a 1000 watt amp, with minor cutting of the cheap plastic for room of course.

Also, should you happen to put an aftermarket headunit in, I might suggest getting one where you can put the CD in through the faceplate, rather than using the ones where the faceplate folds down and you put the CD in behind the faceplate. The "upper lip" of where the stereo resides in, makes it a bit difficult to take the CDs out and put them in.

Have a mechanic or trained professional install the Cig Lighter if it comes with one and you need access to the center console. Took mine off the other day to route some wires for the stereo a week ago and spent an hour trying to get the lighter back. Long story short, I gave up and its kinda just lopping around there untill I feel confident I can screw the peice in to tighten it down.

Sunroof (if you have one) nuff said.

Battery space is too tight. I can already suggest putting it in the back and getting a bigger one if you want more battery power.

Only 3 front and/or all around bodykits for the car that I know of exist. Again, not very popular to get alot of parts for, but its better than nothing.

Overall, handling and performance, its a great car, better than my old ones on that matter. Although I do have a D16 (or was it B16? whatever comes from an 89 Integra) I really have to say I'm proud to actually own something as nice as this and that sticks out from the rest (despite its odd looks) :D

^^ Pay no heed to the tires, I got lower profile ones, and the hood was eh "custom" done (rigged).

i saw a pic of the engine bay on one of the 87 HF's and it looks like its kinda hard to get plugs out since it is so close to the radiator and that area...and the HP is quite low as well..63 correct? if so that like only 10 more then a geo metro...
