Does it sound like i need a new clutch or transmission?
i noticed my transmission/clutch is pretty noisy. Here are some symptoms:
- When accelerating in first from a stop (nothing crazy just normal driving), once it gets in the higher rpm's i start to hear a pretty loud rattle/chatter. Once i shift into second i can barely hear it towards the higher rpm's and i cant hear it at all in any other gear.
- When idling and sitting in neutral, i noticed i hear a little chattering noise, but when i push the clutch in it goes away completely, and comes back when i let off the clutch.
So far these are the only two symptoms i can describe, any ideas? thanks

i would lean more toward damage to the disk itself or ISB (input shaft bearing) in the transaxle case. a video clip with good audio may help clear things up some...

the pilot bearing would do the opposite, it would be quiet then make noise when the clutch is pushed in (or anytime the crank/flywheel and clutch disc/input shaft are spinning at different speeds.)

I know this is a long shot but I had the same symptoms when my heat shield came loose.
I wouldn't hear it in higher gears either which is what made me go WTF when we realised it was a loose heat shield...
Just a suggestion "in case".

that would be sweet. I'll look into that, thanks! But did it make noise while you were idling and then go away when you push the clutch in?

Definitely first check for loose or cracked exhaust heat shields. If those are fine, then it could possibly be a bad input shaft bearing in the transmission.

when i replaced my ISB i had access to a lift, every tool i needed, a factory service manual and a few years of vocational experience. even then i made a small mistake but luckily i had a spare parts transmission to pull the needed replacement shift interlock from...
still rule out everything else before going into all of that.

Re: Does it sound like i need a new clutch or transmission?
so i checked the heat shield and it seemed to be on there pretty tight, it really seems like its coming from the transmission though. If it were to come down to finding a different tranny, where would a good place be to start looking?

Depends on what kind of tranny you're looking for...
You looking for a tranny from SOHC D series or a mre desireable upgrade such as an SI or GSR?

probably just the SOHC D series, the engine is gonna stay pretty much stock cuz i only use it for commuting so i dont really see the need to get an upgraded tranny

I would say junk yard then.
You can usually get them for pretty cheap there... A few hundred bucks tops.
Do you have a D15 or D16?

-If the noise only occurred when pressing the clutch pedal, but in & out of gear and moving & stopped, then it would be the clutch release (throw out) bearing.
-Since the noise only occurs with the clutch engaged (clutch pedal not pressed) out of gear & stopped and in gear especially when accelerating in first gear (highest torque transfer rate into drive-train) and I'll bet also when decelerating in first gear with the clutch engaged, then yes it's a bearing inside the transmission that has seen it's better days.
The most common to fail is the input shaft bearing as hondamark35 stated above. If you took it to a Honda Dealer to replace they would charge about 8 hours. If you took the trans out, and took it to a shop to replace the bearing, the labor time should be almost half. Now that's not to say that there aren't other bearings inside the transmission that could make noise, but, again, the input shaft bearing is the most common (it's also the smallest "support" bearing in the transmission) to fail & make noise. If you do decide to replace the bearing, make sure you replace the input shaft seal also, it would just be silly not to since it's one more punch after the input shaft bearing is out.

Re: Does it sound like i need a new clutch or transmission?
thanks for the reply honda_luvr, i've been reading up a bunch about it and i've pretty much come to the conclusion that its the ISB. I've found a few really good DIY's on it and will probably attempt it pretty soon. Can you buy the bearing and seal as a kit or do i need to buy them separately, and where's the best place to order these from?
