Re: Whats the best synthetic oil to run (bmw626)
Off the shelf: German Castrol Syntec (0W-30).
Full group IV synthetic (Mobil 1 is a refined group III; not a full synthetic).
If you want info on oil, go to http://www.bobistheoilguy.com. Most of the people on here who reply to oil threads don't have a clue.

Re: Whats the best synthetic oil to run (AutoXer)
Best oil and filter:
AMSOIL. hands down. Find me another oil that you may safely run for 25k miles. I'm just telling you its better than Mobil1 too. If you want specifics, PM me.
First off, its a REAL synthetic, made in a lab. Its not cheap tho, 5.50 a quart, but it did make my D16 feel more "revvy". Note that I know my engine very very well, and no one else would notice the difference.

Amsoil makes great stuff, but they're damned pricey. Also, Amsoil buys their base stock from Mobil, they don't make their own base stock.
I've been running Mobil-1 5W30 Oil & M1-104 Filter since oil change #1 @ 3,500 miles and I've had zero issues (~66K, 8.5yrs, daily driver). Doesn't burn oil, good compression all around, can't really complain.

Motul is the ****! B-series, I reccomend 8100 5w30. Right around $7 a litre (for those metrically uneducated, that's a hair more than a quart).

i like mobil 1. royal purple is a fully synthetic oil and is pretty good but it doesnt have the detergents in it that mobil 1 does. and for people who are only using fully synthetic oil so they can run for 7 thousand miles before an oil change are insane! and dont really care about their motor. i use mobil 1 5w-30 and mobil 1 filter and i change my oil every 2500 miles. its expensive but its worth it!

no, 2500 mile oil changes is insane, dude, you need to do some more homework. HONDA reccomends 7500 miles and thats with a natual oil. If you take care of your entire car and know what your doing, yes, 10k miles on a synthetic is fine. I run 25k miles with amsoil, however i check ti frequently, and the filter only goes 12.5k miles.

Re: Whats the best synthetic oil to run (reconstructdead)
I used to run Castrol Racing RS 10w60 and that was one of the best oils I've ever tried... Even a 60 mile highway trip in full-throttle in 4th speed (7200rpm) didn't make my car burn even a 0.1 quart... that was when I had 1994 B16-hatch... that oil was like IT WAS MADE JUST FOR THAT SPECIFIC CAR... awesome
Now I have a 96 DX and it just doesn't need a racing oil
Now I use Shell Ultra 5w40... and it's great...
As for filters... I always use Honda OEM... it just gives me the piece of mind...

Extreme conditions are as follows:
Regularly driving less than 5 miles per trip, or in freezing temperatures, less than 10 miles
Driving in extremely hot (over 90'F) conditions
Extensive idling or long periods of stop-and-go driving
Driving in mountainous conditions
Driving on muddy, dusty, or de-iced roads
If you autocross, road race, "street race", or otherwise stress your car in ways a 98 year old grandmother wouldn't, it's a given that you should follow the extreme maintenance schedule.
That said, the extreme maintenance schedule is 6 months or 3750 miles, whichever comes first. And I'll admit that 2500 miles is kind of silly.
But let's put it another way: Does it hurt the engine if to change the fluids more often than they should? Does it hurt the engine to change them less often than they should? Which side of that fence would you rather be on?
