Icon2 What is causing this white goo???

Hello, what could be causing all of this white stuff under the valve cover of my friends H22. The goo is under the valve cover only, not on the head/cams. I have done a leak down test and found nothing. The car is noticably down on power originally thought to be bad rings.

Edit- The car noticably smokes under hard acceleration, what could be the cause knowing the leakdown test came out perfect?

Water is getting in there somehow mixing with the oil. Typical color of oil mixing with water.

bad head gasket possibly mcvtec is right though... that is what happens when water/coolant mixes with the oil

Forgot to say that, most likely coolant + oil.

I thought the headgasket, but this is the only place the goo is. The dipstick is clean and the valvetrain is clean. What else could it be?

its the head gasket. its just beginning to mix. fix it now before you need a god damn engine.

I've seen this on engines without a EGR system installed(valve cover vented to atmosphere), but that is pretty bad and unless you drive alot of short distances where the car doesn't warm up very much I'd say head gasket is starting to go.
Previous posters are right, fix it now and it will only be a head gasket, wait till it totally goes and you'll spin bearings and warp **** and need a new motor.

I just rode in the car and under hard acceleration it smokes quite a bit. It doesn't smell like coolant, more like oil.

not really sure if this will help since you seem to don't want to believe the head gasket is going bad but it's the damn head gasket and you should probally be fixing it instead of driving it around and looking at the smoke

Faulty pcv system (blocked pcv valve, etc) can cause this as well.. but 70% of the time its the headgasket thou.

what is the motor setup?

I'm getting the same stuff. I'm not losing a drop of coolant. Look it is white not a shade of green.

my grandpa a mechainic said it could be from a bad ventilation system.

do a compression test.

replaceing head gasket = money..... not alot but still more than a 10 dollar PCV. and on the valve cover there is a little nipple coming off with a hose leading back to the intake tube... if you have a breather on that you may be allowing moisure up in to the valve cover and when it starts to get hott the moisture will tend to move to the top of the valve cover and mix with oil. that would explain why your its just on the valve cover.

because the milky residue you see only happens when temp's are hot... so may explain why it dont appear on the valves and such

Have you had this engine apart before? Was it all gooey then, or did this just recently start?

I'm thinking that maybe in it's past it had a blown head gasket and whoever fixed it just neglected to clean the inside of the valve cover. This would explain the confined area of the goo. As for the car smoking, maybe it just burns oil.

Of course this is just a guess. Good luck.
