Ok, wtf is this. I have never heard of it before, but a friend was looking through his Chilton for the early Del Sol's, and this was what was in it... What is this, and what are the differences between like the z6/y8 SOHC's and/or the B16's/B18's?

it is found in the 92-95 civic vx (if there are more correct me)
basically it is the economy form of vtec

under regular driving conditions where u arent going over the vtec crossover point, so under 4500ish rpm or so, only one intake valve is open during acceleration, this gives it the amazing fuel economy.

when ur shifting above 4500ish, then the cam makes both intake valves open.
i belive the vtec-e motor is rated at 92hp

i think the crossover is like 2500
but anyway, when vtece is "engaged" the motor essientally turns into a DX engine.

its pretty crappy but good for fuel economy.

i doubt it would be that low, because u get the amazing fuel economy with one intake valve, but it would be kinda hard to accelerate to city driving while keeping it under 2500rpm with only like 70 hp on tap

vtec-e was found on 92-95 civic vx and 96-00 civic hx. vx was a 1.5 sohc 92 hp, and the hx was a 1.6 sohc 115 hp. under 3k rpm, only 1 intake valve is open to conserve gas, and after 3k both open for more power.

almost forgot, the 01+ civic hx and ex are also vtec-e. 1.7L, hx=117 ex=127 hp.

VTEC-E stands for VTEC-Enhanced. This is the only electronic valve control system offered in 2001-up CIViC's. There is no such thing as VTEC any more. VTEC died in 2000. There is VTEC-E on D17 EX's and HX's, and iVTEC on the 'new' K20 Si's. iVTEC is actually an enhanced version of VTEC-E, but that's going OT, so...

Put another way, VTEC-E was/is superior to regular VTEC. VTEC-E survived the 90's; VTEC did not. iVTEC is superior to VTEC-E. iVTEC will survive the next few years; VTEC-E will not. VTEC-E will be around as long as Honda is making D-series motors. After that, it will go the way of VTEC.

Next item: VTEC-E will go into '16-valve' mode well below 2500-RPM. Your 4500-RPM comment is way off the mark. For example, a VTEC-E motor in 5th gear is only doing 3000-RPM at 80-MPH. If your figure was correct, that would mean VTEC wouldn't kick-in until 120-MPH. Hello?!?!?!?

Then there is the 'running on 1-valve' comment. There are only two-modes of valve operation on a VTEC-E engine; 12-valve mode and 16-valve mode. Actually, all 16-valves are opening and closing in both modes; however, in '12-valve mode', so called, the secondary valve sucks on a very small tit. This causes the mixture to swirl in the combustion chamber when it goes into the enhanced stoichiometric region, and allows the leaner mixture to ignite, blah, blah, blah.

I assume this is going to turn into another VTEC-E flaming thread, but I wanted to set the record straight with a couple of facts. I'll stop right here though. Most ppl can't handle the truth...

hmmm on my friends 96 hx it has vtec-e. and it stands for vtec economy. thats what the honda website told me.

the cam is a little more aggressive, i think it has a higher lift. but the HX isnt no slug, my HX ran a 15.6@86 with a 2.08 60' with intake and a muffler. Thats pretty damn good IMO compared to similar cars (i.e. an EX) (to all the haters)

Yep! The VTEC-E has a 'hot' cam and it's a roller cam to boot...

You say it is more "advanced" than conventional VTEC found in like the B16/B18's? I can see how it could be much more fuel economic, but as far as power, wouldn't it be about the same or even a little less? The engines that were produced with it seem to be more geared for economy and less for power. For instance, if VTEC-E was offered in a DOHC form w/ the same specs as the B16, would it be the same power but with more gas mileage, or would it still lack the power?

my friend has vtec-e in his vx, you can't even hear it engage or feel it or anything, but we put a p28 in it and the vtec pops as loud as any other vtec dohc or sohc, the car still only has like 92 hp and he has to downshift to 2nd to get up a mild hill, but the vtec sounds nice with the p28

I heard if vtec-e is not working, your car would actually be faster.

Not sure though, since I don't drive a sohc honda.

This is also what I heard. There are 3 types of vtec.

SOHC Vtec-e
SOHC Vtec (found in the SOHC Si)
DOHC Vtec

The SOHC vtec-e being the most economical, and the SOHC vtec being a little more geared toward performance, and then the DOHC vtec.
