Default Timing belt Q

I just had a quick question about my timing belt. I have about 65k miles on my 93 civic now and need to get it changed by 90k, which is the recommended interval. But my question is, what will happen if the belt breaks and I stop driving right away? Will any engine damage occur?

i beleive every 90k is the reccomendation...if it snaps while driving, your car will come to a complete stop...there could be engine damage also(bent valves)

It's actually 90K or 6 years - which ever occurs first.

You're way over due by time.

Have the timing belt, drive belts, water pump, cam seal, crank seal, and engine coolant replaced.

I got the car back in febuary, so maybe the previous owner already changed it. Is there any way I can tell? Because right now I dont have the 500 bucks to get it changed.

Mechanics familiar with those cars can look at certain areas for indication if the belts/water pmup have been changed, but with that age/mileage it might be impossible to tell without tearing it down and looking.

A few indications would be looking down the timing side of the engine and checking to see if the water pump mlooks newer than the block, as in, itf it's been changed it'll be a different color silver/lighter color than the block that it's bolted to.

Also you could at least pull the valve cover off (go ahead and change out the gasket and 4 tube seals) and just visibly check the condition of the t-belt where it goes around the cam gear. Obvious visible cracking means change it like yesterday, but sometime a year old belt looks like a 5 year old belt.

I just had the valve cover off last week to change the gasket and seals, didn't think to check the timing belt at the time. I'll take it off again and see what the belt looks like

If the timing belt breaks your gonna stop driving pretty much immediately as the engine doesn't run without it. you can check it, but its really hard to tell the difference honestly, even when i broke a belt on a D15B7 i used to have it still looked ok except for where it was broken, that engine didn't die btw, I was doing about 120km/h, i had just passed a car and was slowing down, and the car just quit, put it in neutral and tried and tried to get it to start, obviously didn't, i had no idea the timing belt snapped it didn't make and funny noises, it just shut off. I got lucky and when i put a new timing belt on it fired right up and ran fine. I think thats the exeception the rule though, especially with me cranking it over.

I just got the timing belt, water pump, motor mount, and all other belts replaced today. I took a look at the old timing belt and it said the brand was Contitech. Does anyone know if this would be the original belt or not?

no, that is an aftermarket belt made by Continental.

I offer these belts as a cheaper option to customers, as they are a very good product(I trust Continental with bike tires for years).

Most of the older Honda belts that were original would have a big HONDA on them, plus the factory part number.

Original? Who knows, it either is, or someone replaced it with a Honda OEM belt.

Maybe, i thought that too, i am not takin' the chance.. i have a belt and tensioner ordered, i'll check the water pump and if it has signs of wear i'll just buy it locally. I wonder if there is a way of knowing if that belt is the factory original or a replacement.. ? 200,000 miles that would be nuts! It almost makes me want to park it till my parts get here.
