Default t takes along time to warm upHeat barely warm

Thanks in advance for any advice--

1995 honda civic dx 1.5litre

Problem- luke warm heat, small drip from water pump bolt when cap is on radiator.

Engine operates at normal temp and doesnt oveheat ( just under half on the guage) although it takes along time to warm up. Bottom hose cold, top hose hot. Heater core inlet and outlet hoses warm but not real hot. Also there is a small weap of coolant leaking from the back bolt of the water pump, really hard to see as it is directly behind the alternator.

I understand that the water pump and gasket will need replaced due to the leak but I am wondering how this can effect the teperature of the coolant. I mean if the water pump was totally shot wouldnt it over heat? The coolant in the radiator does get hot but it seems that the thermostat must not be opening enough or something to keep the bootm hose cool. Could the pressure loss of that drip be the cause, or a bad thermostat too? The radiator, cap and thermostat have been replaced, or so Im told by the guy I bought it from and they do look new. The radiator, and hoses are clean and in good shape, And I have been keeping the coolant full.

If I have the radiator cap off while the car is running at temp, the leak stops so I know thats not good, but Im not that good with these cars, its my first honda. Im wondering, if the thermostat is stuck would the pressure build excessively and cause the pump to weap out the seal?.

So any way the parts I plan to replace tonight are listed below and is this all I should need?, advice?...thanks

Water Pump
Timing Belt
Valve Cover Gasket
Water Pump Gasket
Thermostat

The parts you listed were pretty much your whole cooling system minus hoses and the radiator/heater core. So that should solve your issue. If coolant is coming out of the weep hole in the waterpump, it's def. time for a new one.

The cold heat could be caused by your heater valve not opening up. When you change the setting from cold to hot, is there resistance in the lever? There is a cable running through your dash to a valve. The valve is located in the engine bay. Look right by the firewall where all the heater hoses are. There will be a valve there with a cable attatched to it. Try manually moving that valve. See if you get heat.

I did check the valve on the fiewall as well as the linkage under the dash( thanks to this site, I found that in a thread yesterday) and they both are working well and smooth. I just worry Im going to tear this thing down and get some kinda suprise leaving me without a vehicle, so Im trying to cover all the bases first...

Thanks for your help!
