Usually when the regulator is damaged, so are the tracks.
If you found one brand new from Honda for $550, that's actually a pretty good deal.
SRS UNIT ASSY.
77960-S04-N81
LIST: $663.24
If you really work on your car yourself, then I'm sure you're aware that you don't HAVE to buy new parts for everything that breaks. Face it, the SRS unit does not usually break. There might be a lot of examples you can quote, but it is FAR from a common problem. I would take the guy up on buying his SRS for $200. Maybe he'd even be willing to part with just the parts you need. I'm sure someone else wants the airbags themselves at least (and I'd recommend not shipping them).
REGULATOR ASSY., R. FR. DOOR (MANUAL)
72210-S00-003
LIST: $73.45
REGULATOR ASSY., L. FR. DOOR (MANUAL)
72250-S00-003
LIST: $73.45
Other parts that can become damaged when windows go off track...
SASH, R. FR. DOOR (LOWER) (FR)
72230-S03-003
LIST: $32.54
SASH, L. FR. DOOR (LOWER) (FR)
72270-S03-003
LIST: $32.54
SASH, R. FR. DOOR CENTER (LOWER)
72231-S03-003
LIST: $20.69
SASH, L. FR. DOOR CENTER (LOWER)
72271-S03-003
LIST: $20.69
CHANNEL, R. FR. DOOR RUN
72235-S03-G01
LIST: $70.89
CHANNEL, L. FR. DOOR RUN
72275-S03-G01
LIST: $70.89
REGULATOR SET, R. FR. DOOR (POWER)
04720-S00-A01
LIST: $72.09
REGULATOR SET, L. FR. DOOR (POWER)
04725-S00-A01
LIST: $72.09
MOTOR SET, R. FR. DOOR REGULATOR
04722-S00-A00
LIST: $193.64
MOTOR SET, L. FR. DOOR REGULATOR
04727-S00-A00
LIST: $193.64
The means that if you have manual doors it could cost up to $197.57 per door to fix. And that's just in parts. Not including labor. For a power door, it could end up costing up to $389.85 per door just for parts, no labor.
Like I said before... you got lucky.

Everything is a wear item. All things wear out after a certain amount of time. Certain items (brakes, tires, bulbs...etc) wear quicker and are commonly replaced. Other items (engine, body, trasmission...etc) also wear out but at a much slower rate. As we speak my body is currently wearing out. It's rusting. All hondas up here rust away, somehow there hasn't been a recall for that yet................
My advice to you is just to suck it up and try to get a used one. Trying to force a recall will no doubt fail and most likely cause you to get more frustrated.
Best of luck to you.

I can't see Honda replacing all possibly defective units (I think it'd be a very small number, if any, that fall under a manufacture defect since it's odd that a manufacture defect would take almost ten years to show up).
I don't even think Honda would pay for part of the charges.

i've never heard of one failing until now. if enough of them failed, it would be recallled since its a safety issue. I've got a 14 year old toyota 4runner that has a recall on a steering rod right now. getting ready to take it in and get it replaced, and re-aligned free of charge. it does happen on older vehicles.

I wonder when that recall was announced though.

I think he wants it to work in the event he's in a crash.
Looking at the site the OP linked to, I see some people making more than one report. One lady (who reported at least twice) complained that her ABS- AIR BAG light is on the dealer wants her to pay for the replacement of her airbag motor.
I saw another guy who said his SRS light is on and his horn and cruise control just stopped working too. That's not a problem with the SRS unit. That's probably his cable reel. I don't know how it was damaged without removing it or anything though.
That's one of the problems with reading the complaints of a lot of people online. Most people don't know what's really broken. If they have any idea, it's because someone else told them. Often the middle man (the owner) misunderstands what is really broken and what needs to be done to fix it.
So though it might say there are 21 reports for one year, make and model under a certain system... that might not be true since the diagnosis is incorrect or misunderstood.

Re: (speedy_beedee)
New to the tuner world and honda-tech so excuse if this is a repeated question.
The SRS light was on when I bought my 95 EX coupe a week ago. What are the easiest things to check before you get into this module talked about in this thread?
Ive read some other threads about a crank reel? or something like that?
There is a possibility the car was stolen in the past. The ignition housing was broken and held in place by the plastic housing. The drivers seat was also replaced by previous owner with a four door tan seat (looks like crap in a black interior).
Are any of these things pointing to an obvious point of failure to anyone?
What steps should be taken to troubleshoot the SRS light is my main question.

Its called a cable reel, but sometimes people refer to it as a clock spring. They usually don't fail unless they are installed incorrectly. In your case, it could have been damaged because of a theft attempt. You could try resetting the SRS first. Its really easy and there are tons of examples on this site. If all else fails you can usually find a cable reel for about $45-60; just make sure you install it properly otherwise you will have a paperweight.
Honda Parts Unlimited
I have purchased parts from them before and I have always been satisfied. When installing the cable reel, rotate it clockwise until it stops, then rotate it counterclockwise approximately two and a half turns until the arrow is pointing straight up.
