think that qualifies as a pond, in any case your engine would probably short out haha

I like my SRI. I would suggest not looking into noticeable horsepower gains with whatever you get however.
What you will get-
cold air intake:
-Better airflow than stock
-Knowledge that your car is getting more cold air, thus more potential for power=added placebo effect
-Danger of hydrolock from deep puddles
-Needing to conciously avoid puddles because of potential hydrolock
short ram intake:
-Better airflow than stock
-Quicker throttle response
-No danger of hydrolock unless you try to cross a flooded road
-Less cold air
Simply because I wanted some good response, and not having to deal with freaking out over puddles in my lane, I went with the SRI. Back when I was stupid and crazy, I used to just hit puddles in the rainy season for fun with that thing on. Big ones. No problems with hydrolock at all, and that is worth a lot to me.

I've had both a CAI and an SRI, both by AEM.
The CAI didn't seem any different from stock save for being louder. I never avoided puddles and even went through a good eight inches of water (stock ride height) with it, though I did first disconnect the intake from the intake manifold. I went through the flood because I didn't want to be trapped on an island for much of the rest of the day (place "floods" whenever the tide comes in).
My CAI was stolen when my car was stolen. I had to replace it with a SRI because though I wanted a stock airbox again (and had for some time before the car was stolen), I couldn't find an airbox for sale locally and my parents weren't willing to ship my old one here from the other side of the states.
The problem with the SRI was I lost considerable bottom end power. This was solved as soon as I replaced the SRI with a stock airbox.

Re: (NOFX)
A similar situation arose for me when a water line got split in my neighborhood and flooded the roadway about 8 or so inches. I had to ford the area, and was able to no problem with my short ram. I do have to say that I have no interest in the cold air intakes as opposed to the SRI that I have.
PS- I agree, there is still a certain appeal that the OEM airbox has when simply modified, which is why I can't bear to let mine go. So, it's kicking around in my garage.
