Default retrofit A/C? r12 and r134a compressor the same?

well my A/C died and i need a new compressor. i was under the impression that retrofitting an ac system involved changing only the gas input nozzles so that the old refridgerant cant be used. am i wrong?

the compressor should still be the same right?

thanks guys

no, the r134 ac compressors are different, the hoses are different sizes. I also swapped the r134 fittings, it gets cold but does the car does not get cold as fast as r12
