Default Reprogram Honda remote for 1997 Civic anthitheft system

I have a 1997 Honda Civic LX sedan (Canadian model, which is equivalent to a US Civic DX sedan model according to Edmund.com: no power lock, no power window, etc). The car has the dealer installed antitheft system which is armed and unarmed with the Honda keyless entry remote (the remote does not lock or unlock as the car has NO power lock, just arm and disarm the antitheft system), I recently bought an additional used Honda keyless entry remote identical to the one I have (which works on the car, same FCC ID: A269ZUA101, same Canada number, same Ref No, same P/N: 08E61-S01-1M0-01).

I try to use these following instructions available online to reprogram the remote I just bought but it does not seem to work:

1. Turn Key to on position.
2. Push and hold valet button on the stock radio (which is skinny bar located between am/fm & cd/tape buttons on stock radio). Door locks will cycle one time.
3. Press any button on remote one time within 20 seconds. Door locks will cycle again.
4. To program up to 4 additional remotes repeat step 3 for each remote.
5. Turn key off programming is complete.

As my car does not have power locks, the door locks will not cycle as indicated in step 3 above. So I do not if the program instructions are incorrect or the used remote I just bought is defective as I cannot use it to arm or disarm the antitheft system.

Does anyone know of about a different procedure to reprogram a keyless entry remote for a 1997 Honda Civic with a dealer installed antitheft system (but NO power lock)?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

You need to have this moved out of the CRX Forum and Go to the 92-2000 Civic forum.

I recently installed the factory alarm in my 98 EX (US). The factory alarm module bolts onto the top of the factory radio. On the Alarm module is a switch. One position is labeled "CX/DX" the other is "HX/LX/EX"

You essentially have a DX - no power locks. Your switch however is in the HX LX EX position - in other words, civics with power locks and keyless entry.

If your switch was in the CX DX position your alarm would operate in passive mode. Not sure exactly, but something like you turn the car off and 60 seconds or so later the alarm arms. If a door is opened you have a few seconds to put the key in the ignition and start it before the alarm goes off. No remote necessary.

In short, I do not have a direct answer to your question about remote programming. Me thinks why even bother with a remote that doesn't lock or unlock doors? Pull your radio out, flip the switch to "CX/DX" and your alarm will arm/disarm automatically. Forget the remotes.

Thanks for your inputs Jibs. Meanwhile I have searched handaaccessories.com and decided to try a different set of programming instructions (the Accord 1998-2002 appear to use the same remote). And guess what these instructions work: both of my remotes now arm and disarm my 1997 Civic antitheft alarm. I am really lucky.

I will keep in mind your suggestions for passive arming of the car, when my remotes will be broken or lost, as I will not bother looking for remote replacement.

You said that you recently installed the factory alarm on your 1998 EX, do the instruction manual mention passive arming for CX/DX ? I bought my car used and the antitheft instructions were not in the car. There is no mention of antitheft system in the 1997 Civic user manual.

Thanks in advance for your answer.
