Removing crankshaft bolt

Removing crankshaft bolt
I'm having one hell of a time trying to remove the crankshaft bolt. I used an electric impact and my old small air impact with an old *** air compressor with no luck. Any suggestions?

If you could still drive it go to the closest shop to you and have them hit it with there impact gun. You need a good gun to take it off, or you could use the breaker/cheater/200lb friend jumping trick.

Home Depot sells a 4 ft. 1" black pipe for $4. That and a 3/4 breaker bar (loan) from autozone (AND a friend on the brake) will do it.

it does get touched alot but snap-on and moroso sell pulley tools that will simplify the process(it holds the pulley while you brek the bolt loose. Its real easy once you get one of the but you still might need your 200lb friend

Glad I checked this thread. I only found the moroso crank pulley wrench. But keeping the crank pulley still is no longer a problem for me and I still can't get that thing off.

Re: (INVALID)
I have no problems with keeping the pulley still. I know for a fact now that the compressor I'm using isn't putting out enough air volume for the impact. I'm going to see if I can get a hold of another compressor or just take it to a friend's place

Car in 5th gear, wife standing on the brake, 8ft breaker bar, 1.5' extension to get it out of the wheel well, a lot of PB Blaster, and me hanging off the end of the breaker bar got it off for me.

This is what I've used a few times and it's worked great.
TheToolWarehouse
In addition to that, I use a 1/2" drive rachet and a pipe attached to the special tool. Then I use a 1/2" drive 6pt socket on the of a 20" 1/2" drive extension connected to a 1/2" drive breaker bar with another pipe over that for leverage. Wedge the pipe thats with the special tool against the ground, have one person hold the extension in place and have another person put everything they have into lossening that bolt. Here's a couple pictures to show what I'm talking about. The pictures were taken of a friends Accord when we replaced his timing belt and water pump.

Re: Removing crankshaft bolt (tony)
We wedged a hex bit in between the flywheel and casing to get the pulley to stay still. Make sure you do it at a strong part of the casing, otherwise it'll just flex, or worse, crack.

There were some picture of what happened when someone did it this way. He ended up braking a chunk out of the tranny housing. I'll see if I can find the post.

I used that same spot, but luckily it flexed for me. I moved the bit up a bit toward the passenger side where the casing is much thicker and it worked like a charm.

I ended up breaking my extension doing it the way pictured. I ended up taking the bumper off, and using only a 3 inch extension, and then used both legs to break it loose. With an extension that long you loose a lot of leverage.

Yeah, when that bolt finally brakes free, that extension really pops and vibrates. But if the extension does brake, oh well. As long as no one got hurt, just go to Sears and get a new one for free. And yes, with that long of an extension you do get a lot of flex and loss of leverage and thats why I use such a long cheater bar.

I use the moroso holder, and a 1/2" ratchet with 2" extension and a 3ft black iron pipe over the ratchet. wedge moroso tool against ground, stand on iron pipe, bolt is loose.
