I noticed that when I went on the highway some time after I installed my hasport motor mounts (62A) at 70 mph my steering wheel shakes a lot more. I know that the mounts will make your car vibrate more at IDLE but I am not sure about when your going 70+. I didn't go on the highway immediately after I installed the mounts, so its hard to tell if its the mounts fault or my steering rack finally went really south. Before the motor mounts install, I do not recall this happening because I replaced my inner and outer tie rods.

You will deffinelty feel the mounts at idle, but the steering shaking on the high way doesn't seem like motor mounts to me.

have you replaced any other parts? Ball joints?

Shaking on the highway after XXmph sounds like more of a tire or alignment issue...

Start by balancing your wheels and getting an alignment check before you go any further.

First thing I did after I felt this was rebalance my tires, for free. Didn't change a thing. An alignment was done way too recently for it to be that. I believe it was done 5 or 6 months prior to the motor mount install, and nothing else was changed.

Well as long as I know for SURE that it cannot be the motor mounts causing steering wheel shaking, I can look into my alignment AGAIN and possibly the rack. If the inner and outer tie rods are new, I don't think the steering rack itself can cause shaking though, right? I mean if the rack itself goes bad it should only cause leaking of power steering fluid..

The front upper control arms are Skunk2 Pro camber kits which are about 3 years old. I think the front lower control arms are original and I know some of the bushings aren't too great but I didn't think this could cause vibrating at high speeds because it never did before.

Any more ideas? I'd rather not pay for another alignment right now because I find it hard to believe that in a few months my alignment got so bad all of a sudden that my steering wheel violently shakes at high speeds.

if your tires are old/almost balled and you dont have power steering this could be the problem. had the same problem around 60+ mph in my hatch minus the swap.

I do have power steering, and my tires are almost new. I am pretty sure the CV joints are good because they looked great when I got them with the swap and installed them last year. My power steering pump does make a little noise/vibration and it leaks a slight amount of fluid over time from the pump itself, but my guess is that the seals inside the pump went bad which is common. Could that cause this shake?

And for the ones who say it could be a bad ball joint, do you mean the one in the upper control arm?

It could be the rack mounts I guess, if this is a common result of bad rack mounts. I will have to check them out.

yes i have the same problem like you dekorum i notice something like that happen when im on the high way like at 80mph it start to shake my steering wheel i have an 88a hasport mount instead vibrate like crazy.

Figured anything out yet? I fixed my power steering pump and it still vibrates more than it should at high speeds. I replaced everything in the front end except the steering rack itself (besides inner and outer tie rods), the rack mounts, and the CV joints.

What kind of wheels do you have? Sounds like one is bent. When I first bought my civic the steering wheel went nuts above 65, I couldn't take it on long trips because it was so bad. I replaced the wheels and it corrected it completely.

It could also be your tires. If you have a slightly torn cord or bulge you may not feel it until the tires want to stretch out a little bit at the higher speeds.

This dude is correct,
check for runout on all the wheels while jacked up to make sure they are not bend, also have the local tire goons check for proper balance on the front wheels.
swapping the fronts to back just for troubleshooting porpuses is the best way to determine troubled parts.

high freeway speed vibration at the steering wheel is mostly caused by seperating tires. dont tell me" but they are brand new" cause Ill just tell you that you opted for cheap malaysian or korean tires, and you get what you pay for.
cause cheap brand new tires are rarely true. If they are used mismatched tires then this is also most likely your case, GL bud.

They are GSR Blades. The two front tires are Nitto 555s which I bought brand new in about August 2010 probably like 4k miles ago. The backs tires are Kumho Ecstas which I bought brand new a few months earlier in early 2010.
I'm not sure what slightly torn cord or bulge is..

theres other issues to look at..

Cheap CV axles that arent balanced will cause this (cheap auto store remans)

Rotors that have runout and/or warped start a bad vibe also.

Take both of those together and the seals in the rack have limited time

Tires are multiple layers and sometimes these layers shift or separate and the tire can still look good but will run like ****. Try flipping them around like suggested, see how that effects the ride. I'm new to this site but not the industry, I'm in to see your results, good luck.

Well I am using the CV axles that came on the swap from Steve at H Motors. I don't think they are cheap auto store remanufactured ones. The rotors are new Brembo blanks that I got a few months ago. The steering wheel used to shake just as much as it does now before and after I installed the rotors.

Maybe the seals in my rack are bad.

I don't really have the money to get new wheels right now =( I wish I could try that. I think its very possible it could be my wheels. I traded for them a few years back from this dude of Craigslist. One could be slightly bent and unnoticeable to me.

I've tried rotating the tires in the past and it didn't help. I can't do it again because one of the wheels makes a lot of noise when I move it to the front because one its four lug holes is bored larger than it should be.
