Hi... How would I use this thing?!?!?! It's one of those three-piece items that only compresses the one side.. but I can't figure out how to use this right!!! How can I get it to work right.

Someone here gotta know.. did I get the wrong item and should I get a two-sided one?

steve, eat a dick. and to the autozoner's credit if you dont know which spring compressor to use on your car, then you should probably not be doing the work yourself. just my opinion. also, civicmon, maybe your "noob" *** should have asked someone who knows before just going out and renting one. or maybe u were afrtiad u were gonna get flamed for posting **** like that on here. geta clue nooby, the customer is NOT always right.

Its a bitch to use, honestly. You have to clip it on the top and bottom, then use a big *** wrench and screw both sides.. Takes like 20 minutes to do 1 shock.

BTW is called a Strut Compressor, and be careful, if you **** up that **** is deadly

the kit i have comes with TWO strut compressors (goes on springs though) and yes, you can use a wrench, but airgun gets the job done in like 2 seconds.


do it the ghetto way, put two tires on either side, and use a ratchet with mechanics gloves.

close your eyes, it helps.

I went to a 24hr one down in south SD and they ALSO gave me the wrong one. They gave me a two-sided one that's too large for the coils.

autozone around my area is decent, kregan is best, napa....(redneck is all i got to say) and dont even think about pep boys. just go in there, do your thing, dont ask questions, they only tell you what the computer tells them. if you REALLY have to ask, bring the stock part in if you can so you can test it out before you drive all the way home, tear apart your car, and find out that flake fucked up.

unless you installing springs that need to be compressed to be put on the shock then you don't need one.

here is what you do

1. loosen the bolt to wear its almost off.
2. take a big towel and wrap it titly around the srping then hold on tight
3. go to some grass or dirt
4. set the strut and spirng combo on the dirt (still holding tight on the towel)
5. stand on it
6. have a freind but a bucket with a towel at the bottom of it in front of the combo
7. then preeced to slowly undo the nut untill it finally lets go.
8. BANG its done

the autozone one sucks, other then it weighs like 60lbs it has big *** claws that get in the way , i just went to harbor freight and bought one for 15 bucks all i had to do was shave one of the "claws" and it works perfectly

im not going to say my way is better, but definatly easier. but
not nearly as safe.

loosen the nutt till the last few threads. point it straight up and down,
nut facing up, turn turn turn, watch your face. It has some preasure
behind it but only jumps about 2-3 feet.

dont be dumb and hurt yourself using my way, it takes some quick
timing or you will bust up your hand when the tophat pops off.

They don't have the right spring compressor at Autozone.

The one they give us is for Macpherson struts, where the gaps in the spring are very large. It works but isn't the right spring compressor.

The spring compressors we use at Honda have three small pegs on top and three on the bottom and a big spinning handle on the top to compress the spring. It's a lot easier than that autozone stuff.

So, does the Autozone one work at all or what? I rented it and am doing my springs this afternoon, so if it's not gonna work, I want to take it back and get what I need to do it right before I tear the car down. Where can you get the right one? Mine looks like it will fit between the coils fine.
