New shell, Which motor for mpg?
So with the help of my friends we grabbed that shell last night.
Anyone have a good suggestion as to what I should swap into it? I have a H coupe at the moment.
I want a car with no performance and mpg, stick with a d15 or go with something like a z6
Missing fuel pump =[
There has been some discussion on Walbros and reliability. Go with a stock fuel pump or a walbro? I have a Walbro on my H swap and it is fine as far as I know. No noises either.
and
What are these? They look like honda parts but who knows. The gas door would fit.

those pieces are the pieces that go between the taillights and back bumper, looking at the pics you already have them on there

All the engines for 5th gen Civics provide great fuel economy. The Z5
is the only one that could potentially do 50+ mpg with little effort.
Wanna impede the flow of traffic and get ~40 mpg? Get a B8.
If your goal is having a zippy car to drive with decent mpg, get a Z6.
If you get a Z5, you could see better fuel economy than a B7 and
make roughly the same hp.
H-T can flame away all they want, but the B16A is my favorite of all
Civic engines. I get ~35 mpg in my hatch, and more power than a D
when I want it. Come at me bro.

Re: New shell, Which motor for mpg?
if you could find a d15z1, that would be best for mpg. my old setup was a z6, with the vx tranny, and man did i save gas. but then again my 0-60mph was like 2 minutes. LOL

Anyways if you want crazy mpg the D15Z1 92-95 VX engine will get it, as would the 96-00 HX D16Y5, but both of those engines will need to be wired up EXACTLY as Honda intended including EGR, 5-wire expensive-*** o2 sensor, etc. etc. The D15Z1 is an absolute turd, but the D16Y5 is actually decently peppy.
Don't forget the transmission. Some people might say the longest gearing possible (such as the 92-95 Cx/VX tranny with it's 3.25Fd and tall-*** gears) but it actually depends on the type of diving. Sometimes you're lugging the engine and needing to throttle it more to pull up inclines on the freeway with a tall-*** tranny, whereas a shorter trans might be closer to that "sweet" spot where you can barely be in the throttle and still maintain minimum freeway speeds
BTW this might sound crazy, but I'm getting an HONEST 32mpg in my 1990 Civic wagon whilst running A/C all the time with my B18B1 swap.

standard b7 with whatever dx trans is the best bang for the buck mpg wise while being able to keep up with traffic. Cheap as heck and you don't need a 400 o2 sensor like the hx/vx.

Re: New shell, Which motor for mpg?
WOW, Awesome replies guys!
I wasn't expecting such a nice thread and you all gave me a ton of options/descriptions
To clarify...
(info from wiki)
1992–1995 Honda Civic VX D15Z1
1992–1995 Honda Civic DX/LX D15b7
1993–1995 Honda Civic Del Sol S D15b7
1992–1995 Honda Civic CX (U.S. model) D15B8
1996–2000 Honda Civic HX 1996–2000 Honda Civic VTI D16y5 - OBD 2 so a little more wiring, well just a jumper and maybe some distributor swapping.
I really like the d15b7. So readily available.
It comes down to price I guess.
b16 swap if I can find a longblock for reasonable.
Also going to have it up for sale while I look for a motor. Might sell it for a few bucks.

Re: New shell, Which motor for mpg?
Try out the three stage vtec head with a long geared tranny, they have decent low end torque because of the lean burn mode so youll be able to still power up hills. You could possibly find one that someone is pulling to swap in a better motor. Theres a kid in another thread up here that is wanting to get rid of the motor from his 95 CX.

Re: New shell, Which motor for mpg?
I was thinking that had to of been what you were speaking of.
I have a VX(z1) and it def got great MPG (44mpg) but IMO (since I own a 15mpg SUV and my sedan gets 22mpg, both hwy) any D-series gets good gas mileage. I would personally go with a a z6 and just put a vx/cx tranny on it.

Re: New shell, Which motor for mpg?
My z6 with the z6 tranny gets 31-35mpg depending if it's more city or highway. And that's a motor that burns oil has been boosted and slightly abused I'm sure etc.

So far I got a b7 about an hour and a half away for ~$300
Going to look into but also keep looking.
I have a really nice scrapyard by me.

Re: New shell, Which motor for mpg?
I have an H swapped in a coupe. I don't want to hack up this 4dr though. Got to cut shifter holes and trans bracket.
Otherwise I probably would switch to it.
Then I would have to get my 2dr welded back up so that a b/d could be swapped into it.
Not ideal unless the new owner is going to swap an H into it?
