Default In - n - out

Gotcha thinking of a nice juicy hamburger right?

So...to my problem....I'm sitting in an In - n - Out drive thru today when my car out of the blue unexpectedly dies...no warning...no nothing....

93 Civic DX hatch - 1.5L - exhaust and intake, nothing crazy.

I just installed a new cluster, so my first thought is my gas gauge is lying to me....and I'm outta gas.....so I walk to the gas station, get a gallon and half, and put in the car....car still doesnt start....

it cranks and cranks, but doesnt start.

Second thought is my security...I have a starter disabler....so I bypass the relay and hook the wiring up...

Car still doesnt start....just cranks and cranks...

I'm thinking possible distributor issues?? I just replaced the outer cap and the rotor part last week....nothing major....and the car has been running fine.

Car has been running strong, so not sure what the issue could be. There are no other symptons to speak of except a squealing noise that I haven't been able to pinpoint yet....but that I think was coming from the wheel well.....so I don't think its related.

Anyone have something similar happen before?? Any tips on what I can look into would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

ok check spark by getn a flat head screw drive and pulln a spark plug WIRE not the spark plug its self, stick the flat head in there and put it close to a ground ( valuve cover is fine) and crank it over to see if there is spark. REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!!
grab the rubber handle DONT PUT YOU HAND ON THE METAL PART. give that a try for spark. and fuel turn the key to on but dont start it, listen close to ur car and try to listen to the rear of the car to see if you fuel pump is purgn.

When I was visiting my dad for 5 weeks, I had a double double every week.

To OP: maybe it's your main relay gone bad

Did you replace the ignition coil? They have a tendancy to go bad on our cars, and it sounds like that could be what happened..

so pull the spark plug wire..the part that sits in the valve cover? and touch the metal end of the screwdriver to the metal parts of the plug wire? or stick the screw driver metal end down to where the spark plug is?

might sound stupid but are you sure that the squeal is not a belt. maybe your alt belt is loose causing your batt to die at the drive thru.
that is what i would check first.

edit: just read that the fuel pump is not making noise.
to check the main relay turn the key to the "on" position when the check engine light turns off you should hear a click. if you don't hear a click then the main relay is bad. if you do hear a click then it's not the main relay, but i did not know that a main relay could go out while the car is on... i've never heard that before, but i don't know everything.

edit again: most of the time the main relay will work the next day. the problem with it is the solder breaks and expands when hot so the connection is not there but when cold the solder is touching, making connection...

so, just recognized maybe another big clue...you know when you turn the key to the on position, the check engine light comes on, other things in the cluster come to life...and the fuel pump whirrs up.....

...none of that happens....

definately main relay then?

Just saw your edits....yea...the whole check engine stuff isnt happening at all either...no clicks at all....

if it is main relay...what cause these things to go bad....just age? considering its a 93 and never been changed....

I'm going to guess that it's the Ignition Switch. I had the exact problem you're describing. I'd be driving down the road, guages would drop and car would shut off. Turn the key off and back to on position, nothing would light up. Turn the key, car would Sometimes not do anything, sometimes would start up and die again right away. Called Honda for a price on ignition switch, turned out i had a recall, got it fixed for free and havent had the same problem in the last 7500 miles since it was replaced.

^^ good ish...

i dont know what other people have posted as i have not read the entire thread

1. main relay as stated
2. your coil wont normally just drop out like that and die.
3. if you HEAR your main relay click in the drivers kick panel, but no fuel pump. might be a pump.
4. Good luck!

That's a thought. In the past couple of months, I just replaced my broken ignition switch [from when my car was stolen] with a used one I bought off H-T. Haven't had any issues though...until now...but could be possible I suppose.

Main relay is my #1 guess right now as well.....no clicks when I turn the key....no cluster action, no fuel pump....no nothing...

Thanks for the all the help guys. I figured out the issue.

When people started talking about the clicking sound relays make...I remember setting up my security and testing it worked by making sure all the relays were clicking...so I figured I would start my test there before I started replacing the main relay.

I tested and found one of my relays wasn't clicking when it was supposed to. Started checking all the wires and found the ground wire cut....touch that to metal and the car fires right up.

So....

- 2 gallon gas can from over priced gas station - $16
- 1 1/2 gallons of gas - $3.86
- # of curse words for not being able to see in the dark - 682
- # of hours spent checking various things on the car to fix it - 2-3
- In-n-Out meal for me and my wife while waiting on the tow truck - $10
- Tow 8 miles home - free roadside assistance
- knowing you were stranded for 6 hours in a parking lot and had to get the car towed 8 miles home because of one lousy ground wire -

PRICELESS!!!
