Default My timing belt snapped while I was driving. Is my car shot?

My car is a 1999 Civic EX. It has 170k miles on it. I drove it two miles up the street and then the timing belt snapped. Can I just replace the snapped timing belt and I'm good to go or is there more extensive work involved? TIA

well it can be repaired could be either a valve bent or worse...depends on how fast you were going "how fast your engine was moving... rpms"

50,000miles is to soon

^^50K?? wtf? id do every 100k or so. anyway, you probably bent valves, and if you were lucky, youll just need to replace various parts on the head(valves, possible guides, seals if its bent bad, or possibly the whole valve seat). if youre not so lucky, it couldve broken into peices, fucked up the pistons and cylinder walls, and destroyed the motor. either way, its not going to be a cheap fix. i say expletive it and swap..

depending on engine speed, etc you might be ok to set timing again with new belt and be ok but I would be suprised. More likely you are pulling the head and replacing bent valves.

So how hard is it to see if my valves are bent or not? Can I just take my engine cover off and check or what can I do? Thanks again for everyones input on my situation.

man i had the same thing happen to me except i had a eg with a 95 gsr motor and i was going to work and all of a sudden i heard a loud *** thump under my car i thought i ran over a rabbit or a rock eventually the car stopped running and i coasted down the road, once i came to a stope i looked in my engine bay and saw that my crankshaft pulley fell off i towed it home and my t belt shred into a million pieces and it melted onto the t belt over so i cleaned it all off and threw on a new t belt and started it right up and never had any problems after that

I really don't the think that honda makes or has ever made a disturbance engine.

Mitsubishi on the other hand does make them, I have heard of alll kinds od stories about loosing a belt on a eclipse and the internals just mangle.

Change the timing belt and start it and see how long it lasts.

It's even easier than that.

Just remove your spark plugs and shine a flashlight inside to see if you have any dents on the top of your pistons. Crank it over a few times and check them all. If you don't have any dents, you're probably good to go! Just replace the belt.

i don't think that the tolerance is tight enough for the y8s to bend valves.

i know that the b7s are fine. valves won't hit the pistons no matter what

i've seen at least 20 snapped timing belts. only half of the civics i've seen had bent valves, and every accord i've seen had bent valves. so from my experience you may be ok.

the 88-91 civics with sohcs would not bend valves they were not interfierans (s/p)

the 92-95 civic non v tec were not either the only ones that were were the vtec ones

No, I say don't pull the head. Unless he wants to waste an afternoon and money on a new gasket.

this is why i think honda should bring some F1 technology into their street cars, individually hydraulicly actuated valves. It wouldn't cost too much i swear
