My car was stolen this morning - How to keep it from happening again?
Sneaky bastards. Someone managed to roll my 98 Civic EX from between my garage and my truck. Looks like they probably jacked and rolled the rear end around, based on the tire impressions in the yard. My dog didn't alert, and I was sleeping in the living room (late night movies).
So, it's been reported to the police. I don't know if that'll do a whole lot of good unless they happen across it. And if they do manage to find it, I'm wondering what condition it will be in. My car is bone stock, with a manual, and in need of a paint job, but otherwise in good condition. The perpetrators obviously really wanted THAT CAR, because they didn't touch my Odyssey, which was unlocked all night (oops), or my truck. One of my neighbors remembers seeing someone walking up and down the street yesterday about 10 times, possibly casing, but couldn't provide a description.
Whether I get my car back, or end up getting a new one, I'll probably be wanting to invest in some sort of aftermarket security. Something to keep them from taking my car(s) so easily. I don't care so much about an intruder getting into the car, as I don't buy expensive radios or upgrades, and I don't keep valuables in my vehicles. If they did steal my stock radio, it would give me an excuse to get a better one. But I would like my car to still be in my yard in the morning. I have a garage, but it's used for other things, so the car can't be kept there.
What would you recommend to do/buy to keep it from happening again? This car is a daily driver, so it would be very inconvenient to have to spend 20 minutes just unlocking, enabling, etc., just to drive it to the store or work every day.

Damn thieves are getting tired of searching for 5th gens and turning to snatching 6th gens now
DX
Solutions to security:
Get a sedan like me cuz nobody likes stealing those *shot*
jk, seriously now...
If you REALLY wanna have some good security from the car itself being stolen, place a wheel boot on a front wheel and another boot on the opposite diagonal wheel
(Front right and rear left for example)
They'd have to jack up both sides and roll it around, not nearly as easy as doing just the front or rear and rolling it
As for additional security, a tilt-sensitive alarm is a must, and an alarm for the windows is helpful too.
Setting up a backup battery for the alarm is a good idea as well.
Hood lock to keep them out of the engine bay and deter all but the most hard-core thieves
And finally, a GPS tracking unit with its own backup battery source should help
If all else fails, park your truck on one side, your van behind the car, and place something else heavy or irritating/loud to move on the third side, with the garage to the front.
Hell, couple that with those boots and I'll bet they'll find something else to steal
Just keep those cars locked!

I appreciate everyone's input here. I'll be looking into some of the options to see if they'll help me.
I appreciate the sentiment here. But please realize that not everyone who happens to own a Civic (gen 5/6, older or newer) has the knowledge of a hardcore Honda owner. Caring for a Honda, for someone like me, means making sure the car is maintained, and locked. Just because I haven't put $1000's of dollars into extra security for the vehicle, or kept it in a garage doesn't mean I don't care for my vehicles.
Yeah, haha. It is a sedan.
My wife drives the Odyssey. She's not nearly as security centric as I am, but so far tonight she's locked the van 2 times.

i recently came to the conclusion it is impossible to stop someone who is capable of stealing a car. you can only slow or possibly recover your car

Whatever. Everyone wants to be a badass.
If the thief is resilient enough he'll get the car. Your task is to slow him down and keep him in the car as long as possible until 1-he is discovered or 2-he just gives up in search of easier pickings.

Sorry to hear about your sedan.
Someone broke into my car recently. Don't know if they were trying to steal it. Wouldn't have got very far as I had completely gutted the interior that day to clean it properly. Didn't even have carpet on the floor.
I honestly think that a gps based alarm that alerts police is the very best option. Cops seem to actually give a **** if there is a chance they might get into a chase. If the thief even has a couple hours with the car it will be completely stripped.

Garage.. I do not see stolen cars like this. If it does happen someone cased out your house in which yes the use of a firearm might be no problem with an attached garage. I am a non confrontational person period. But in the case of them breaking into the garage for a car or anything else and there's no way I will be asking nicely to leave

I remember a story in the news where a guy shot a would-be car thief and wound up doing time himself. No one's life is worth a car.
If you are talking about someone getting into your house, a garage being part of it, then we're talking about a wholly different crime.

Look into a company called Ravelco which makes a pretty nice anti-theft device which goes under the dash and connects to the harness somehow with a unique plug. They have an installer come out to you and install it. I forget what they quoted me but you can go on their website. Sorry to hear about your car.

i dont know if a gps tracker really would get your car back in one piece. i hear there are alarms will track and buzz if your car has been moved for certain distance.
IMO theft coverage is a must have for hondas. its like 60 more dollars for my stock car. you can tell your agent what you have on the car, last car i had with about 4000 mods on it, extra theft coverage was like 90 bucks. so its really not much considering how easy hondas can be stolen, i can use my toyota pickup's key drive my eg. i dont even realize i used the truck key.

good luck with retrieving it, hope it works out.
