Hi guys, I have a 92 honda civic hatchback dx, and i was putting on my new wheels when my front passengar wheel stud broke. I got some blackworks 8 pc extended wheel studs to replace the fronts. One of my buddies I work on my car with said we couldnt install them because we needed a press. My other buddy said it was easy all i needed was an impact, washer's and some other stuff in the garage. Just wondering if you actually need an press, where could i take my car to get this done and what price range you think? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need a press, just a decent impact driver. We had a young tech at one of the shops I used to work at, who had a nasty tendency of breaking studs. He only lasted a month, but we replaced dozens of studs, and never needed a press.

Shove the wheel studs in there. Put an open ended lug nut on, and start torquing it with an impact. Torque it to wheel spec plus 5. Repeat for each stud.

Thanks man, my only concern with it is that my car is my dd. I'm really not trying to have 4 wheel studs out and not have a way to fix it and be out of a car.

Do them one at a time, then.

You won't have any problem with the technique I gave you, though. Tried, tested, and true. I can do a set of 16 wheel studs in 30 minutes, if the car's on a lift. An hour, if I have to jack up each wheel individually.

a press makes it 10x easier, and you can save the good studs. I didn't use a press on my impreza, but i did for my civic

I don't see how a press makes it easier. You can install wheel studs without taking the hub off the car. If you want to put it in a press, you kind of have to take the hubs off. Also, not using a press doesn't stop you from saving the good studs. Just put a nut on the stud, and give it a good smack.

I just don't want to **** it up an have to replace my wheel bearings a well or mess them up. I was looking up some diy on installing wheel studs just not sure what route i should go might try and get this done this week.

Once again, the step by step I gave you puts zero risk on your wheel hub bearings.

EG's with the smaller brake set-up should be fine. EKs, especially the EX, or SI, you could never do something like that, You are required to use the press etc.

Indeed, you can even buy a tool that does what jpbnoman said, but your common toolbox tools, crescent wrench, and a lug will to the trick as well.

FYI, I like telling people about this:

~97 year model Acura CL wheel studs are exactly 10mm longer than OEM civic studs, so you can get a 10mm spacer and run normal lug nuts.

stock studs definitely will.

Not sure what the brakes have to do with it. Rotors, calipers, and brackets come off pretty easily.

I've got 12" front discs on my civic, had no issue with swapping out a wheel stud.

No, they are too long. You must remove the hub to install them. 9 times out of 10 this will ruin the bearing.

you have a special case, but your knuckles are still for the smaller brakes, no? this could never work without grinding an ear off of the stud on a ex/si knuckle.

Dude its as easy as pop the old one out by snaing it with a big hammer or whatever the bigger version is called cant remember right now. Then get the new one in and grease and hilt it in. Took me a hell of a long time on my silverado since I didnt grease them before.... Remember grease makes it easier to put in

... And just so I make a post relevant to the thread, I'm quite certain you do not require a press for a '92 Civic DX. In lots of newer Civic's you have to remove the hub though. There should be a spot where you can rotate the hub, and the stud will be exposed from the rear. From here you simply hammer out the old one and replace with new.

Don't be scared of taking it apart without being able to put it together again. It's a simple procedure, and there's good info on these forums you can find with a search. I used threads on here to replace studs also. Good luck!

A press also makes it 10% correct although I have had no negative effects doing like the above stated jbpoman after we moved out of our shop and sold our press.
nice to have a junk lug laying around to do it with, dont count on using a finish one to do it with.

After reading this thread, I still have no answer if this method works on 96-00 EX/Si

Some say yes, others say no.. Some say the new studs are too long and hub needs to be removed..

Can we get on the same page here.

You have to remove the hub to press in extended studs.


Some people get confuesed on that, they think becuase the stock stud will fit all will, it's just not true.


EDIT- give me a few weeks to get my studs, and I finaly figure out if it's possible to do without removal of the hubs. But I've been told a few times its not.

I would throw those ebay brand studs in the trash!!!
