Skip the driving around Vancouver, it is one big traffic jamb all days long.

Take my word for it I was from Vancouver, but in Kelowna now and I hate going back there because of the traffic, normally when I go now I park the car and use the sky train to get around, it is a lot faster/easier/cheaper. 94

^^ Agreed. Park your new wheels at the closest Park n' Ride, then hop on public transit. Van is cool(ish) but best and easy to explore on foot. $7 gets you an all-day pass? Or something stupid cheap like that. Plenty of chance to be road tripping later in your new car. Driving in Van is more like being parked anyway.

The temp permit is the thing you stick in the front and rear windscreens that doubles as a licence plate. You need one or else you're gonna get some strange looks (or worse) from the itchy trigger finger guys on the US border.

For paperwork, the compliance letter is your get out of jail free card. Not that I've done what you're doing before, but I've read about it.

And yeah, purple is my favourite colour for the 6G Hatchback. I always shed a little tear when I see one in the junkyards.

What I think I might do, is go up to vancouver on a friday for the weekend via train, and not purchase the car until sunday or monday and just drive straight across. I read that you can only import vehicles mon-fri, so it can probably stay in where it is until its time to for across. It also sounds like my gf and I can use public transportation to get around during the weekend.

I have always liked the purple sedans down here, but that color is not available in the hatchback down here. I also have a current passport so we are good there. Thanks for the responses.

I called the US border agency at the Blaine/Surrey crossing and they said you can import a Canadian vehicle into the US any day of the week. I even mentioned this coming Monday since it is a holiday, and he had condescending response for me. Nice guy...Sounds like I'll have my new ride this weekend. I requested the syrup scented money from my bank this morning. I can't wait to get started on this project.

Can anyone offer any words of advice for driving my car down to Vancouver Washington since the dmv may be closed on Saturday (observing holiday) and I will not have a way to get a temp permit? will my Canadian temp permit be good enough you think, or is there a way I can keep the Canadian plate on it while I drive it south? Thanks in advance for the help.

I am really surprised you can import 7 days a week. Canadians can only import from the US Monday to Friday 9-5pm except for on the Victoria BC to Port Angeles WA ferry. Using that ferry we can import on weekends too.

As long as you have paperwork showing the car is owned by you now and that you purchased insurance I'm sure you'll be fine. And the paperwork has to be legal.

Well….I made it across the surrey/blaine border on saturday afternoon! It was incredibly easy. The hardest part was waiting in line. I had to answer some questions about the car, present the required documents, and pay $30 in duty fees and the car was good to go. I was shocked how easy it was to get the car across. I really thought I would run into some sort of road block, but no. Unfortunately the car had a little more rust than I expected, but for $1000 usd, and the 5 hour drive, I was still going to buy the car. I will get it to a body shop in the near future, in the meantime, it will be sitting in a dry garage. The clutch was ridiculous. as soon as you put your foot on the pedal, it starts to disengage. Im glad there were not any steep hills on I-5 south. if I give the car anything more than 1/4 throttle, it starts to slip. As of right now, I have the back half of the car gutted, and am cleaning it up. A couple pieces of the sound deadening came right off, but I will be picking up some dry ice soon to finish removing the rest of the deadening. Ill get some pictures up soon. Ill be working on the interior for now, before I pull the swap from my ek coupe. Im going to be putting the stock motor from the hatch into my white ex coupe as it will be my daily driver. Im excited to get started. I wish I would have weighed the car before I started the weight reduction, but ill just go with the stock figure of 2388. It might be a long shot, but 2000 with the swap and a cage would make me pretty happy. Im a little hungover at the moment and don't feel like searching to see if 2000 lbs. is an attainable goal.

Here are some pics of the car and my progress so far. Removing the sound deadoning with dry ice is my task at hand.

Some simple green would clean that up nicely.

Was able to get nearly all the sound deadening off with only 8lbs of dry ice. **** worked like a charm.

it is unwise to hack at any structure of a unibody car without reinforcement. the minimal weight reduction is not worth it.

Thanks for the comment! It will be caged. I was a little leery myself. only a race car, not a daily. What are some negatives in your opinion to cutting on a unibody?

Trimmed a couple pounds off the left side. I know it's not much, but every little bit helps.

I don't see any weight savings in cutting the unibody panels....i really don't....

I understand your point of view, but there were a couple pounds that were removed. My "consultants" guiding me through this build gave me the idea, and it was my choice whether to cut or not. There is still plenty of metal that I could have trimmed, but didn't want to get too carried away. Every little bit counts, but we all have limits, which is why I didn't keep cutting. There will be a cage put in like I mentioned in a prior post.

The issue i'm having now, is why do my pictures post sideways when they were in the correct position when I previewed the post?

unlike a frame on body car, which gets its structure and rigidity from the frame, the unibody construction IS the frame. when you start taking out impact bars/beams, even just sheetmetal, you start to lose rigidity, which leads to chassis flex issues, not to mention safety. basically, any weight savings you are getting will be negated and then some by the time you cage/reinforce the car.

my track car is gutted. GUTTED. last season, i thought i'd be slick and pull the hvac for more weight savings. first rainy/humid track day= instant regret. i do use an upgraded front traction bar, bigger rear swaybar, etc etc. caged or not, youll never see me touch the metal in the car.

As someone that works in the bodyshop/collision industry, what you did is a bad idea. Cage or not that's not going to hold up nearly as well in an accident and they didn't do all that well to start with.
