I saved a sol: Come meet Skittles!
So the story...
I get a phone call. Dude saw my wanted ad on craigslist and said he had a car I'd be interested in: a del sol. Now, I'm familiar with the car in town, there are only two: mine and this guys. He tells me that the tranny went out in it and doesnt want to mess with it. I decide to go check it out the next day.
Yes, thats a dirty diaper on the trunk xD
So I check it out and it runs perfect, except for this god awful sound coming from the transmission. Overall, the lil cars in pretty good shape: 132k miles, body was really straight. I made an offer and he didnt want it, so I came back the next day and offered $1200 for it and, he took it
I prob could have got it for $1k, but I KNEW it was either the trans or the clutch and I have a spare of each! So it's just a lil work and BAM, I"m good to go.
Unfortunately, I'm out of town for almost a week and the car has just been sitting in my yard... until today. I finally got home and started cleaning up on her.
Onward to pictarz!
How I found her (in my yard)
Acid elbows? How does this even happen???
Ehhh, not too bad.
How do you even break that vent??? Also the clock doesnt work :L(
This needs screwed down.
Niiiiiiice
Broken :S
Its in better shape than my del sol!
So we have multiple things wrong here:
1 - dash vent is broken: that happens.
2 - previous owner just cut the wires to remove the cd player. Didnt use a aftermarket install kit. Ugh. Annoying.
3 - Shifter boot needs reset.
4 - Lil door that covers the cd player is broken too
Teh engine bay! Probably has NEVER been cleaned.
Leaky leaky.
Now for some body shots of problems.
Dent on the hood along with some scratches (keying maybe?)
The emblem is crooked! Gah!
Broken handle.
Why tape off the antenna? Just PAINT OVER IT! Also, scratch.
Something is wrong with this picture...
Hopefully you guessed it... How I HATE to super lube my car.
Awesome: Overspray AND a lil trailer hitch! Has the cable hookup for lights too
Ehh, I like OEM better but they look ok.
Gotta get a new reflector and fix the fender liner.
I wonder whats on this??!!!
I guess they broke off the mirror?
Not as bad underneath the arm rest as I thought.
Umm.. Hell no.
Ahh yes, the top. Almost forgot abotui this. Owner forgot to lock the targa down and it blew off D:
Some foods of some sort?
Ahh, whats under here???
GAHHH!!!
Geez man...
Rabbit food, maybe?
Not gonna lie, I think theyre kinda cute :p
TIme to get cleaning.
Lil better
No random food!

Annnndddd.... There ya go!
So, random interior stuff to fix. I have a tranny, just have to find the time and fix it. I'll be sourcing out a targa top in the meantime. I plan on just sanding the new targa to bare metal, clear it and have a shiny top. Might look kinda cool!
I does have a cel: code 43
I researched it and its either the o2 or fuel pump. It seems to run fine and I have a spare o2 so I'll do that first and see if it clears up. If not, then I'll change the fuel filter and if THAT doesnt work, then I'll swap fuel pumps.
But, all in due time.
Trans and targa are the priority, so thats where I'll start first. She will get lowered and roll on some 16" rotas soon enough too
Welcome Skittles to the HT family!

HAHA! I love all the random crap you find in used cars. I bought this old Tercel once and I found sunflower seeds above the headliner. Wha?
Awesome find, man. $1200 seems like a pretty awesome deal with such low miles.
Also, you need to let us know about all the secret government files on that flash card.

I have a couple of del sols in Florida too. Great beach car where I live.
That cel code 43 may be a hairline crack in the exhaust manifold right near the o2 sensor. Pretty common problem.
I've been looking for a trailer hitch for my bike rack. Maybe we can trade some parts? I have some interior stuff console, driver inside door handle, passenger outside door handle, etc. I know of a couple of junkyards in my area. Make a list. I'm in Central Fl east coast.

Re: I saved a sol: Come meet Skittles!
I THINK it's legit. I remember the car being painted a few years ago: they did it outside! Paint isn't too bad, actually. Just did a lousy job masking. When I find another targa, I'm gonna wet sand with 2k grit and buff it. Also gonna paint the front bumper... Mouth, for lack of a better term, black. Also the rear lip portion.
And the side skirts need to be stripped also, as the paint is coming off there.
And yes, jelly is poto bombing in the background: the battery in skittles was low so I Had to jump her off.
Once I get skittles running (should start on her Sunday, maybe even sat) I'm tearing jellybean down and doing the final prep for paint. So keep an eye out on jellys thread for those updates!
Oh... And the memory card... I had to clean it a lil bit to get it to work. And......
Just happy family photos and whatnot!

Re: I saved a sol: Come meet Skittles!
Just family pics nothin too special, sorry to disappoint.
-----------
So today I pulled the trans from another engine and gathered some tools. I'll start on her tomorrow. There's prob a lil chance she will be running this weekend, but I doubt it.
However, I'm pretty sure I figured out the code 43: the fuel tak has a leak in it!! I came home and saw a wet spot under the car. Checked it out and the gas tank is wet and I can tell it had been patched before (poorly I might add). So I'll have to address that very soon.

Re: I saved a sol: Come meet Skittles!
It may have been addressed but what are the goals? I am in for this one.

Re: I saved a sol: Come meet Skittles!
- make her oem, which means fixing everything that is broken or in bad shape.
- lowered on 16s
- new targa, which I'm going to polish
- wet sand and buff paint.
Performance wise, that's in the air. My current del sol, jellybean, has a rebuilt z6 and newer trans with a new clutch and lightened flywheel. The possibility of swapping that engine into skittles is possible, meaning I stick skittles engine nto jelly.
That's a lot of work though and I'm very busy. So we shall see. Maybe if I an wrangle some help I'll do it.
If that doesn't happen, she will just be a clean daily that possibly in the future, will go back to black we shall see. No use upgrading the d15. I sold my turbo gsr and I'm NEVER going turbo again. If I get the itch, a B swap. I'm basically going from a turbo gsr to a stock del sol S within a couple months time.
It might be too much of a shock to my system XD
-----------------
And concerning work n skittles - 1:58.
That's how long it took me, from the time I started to when the trans was out from under her. That ncludes gathering tools, talking on the phone and just taking my time. I enjoyed it
Took some pics, I'll plead em all when I'm done. I need another jack and another set of hands to help me stick the new trans in. That should happen Sunday.
I took a pic of this, but the trans is actually broken. Like, part of the casing is broken off and all the fluid leaked out. Craaaazy.
More to come!

Whew... What a day. FInished installing the trans on Skittles, then it turned into a super huge yard day. I'm tired.
BUT, enough of that, heres pictarz!
To start things off, I had to pull the tranny I was going to use off another engine (just happened to be out of a del sol S!
And heres where the magicc happenes xD
I dont think this is suppose to happen... For the lfie of me I dont know what they did to this poor tranny, but heres the issue. There was only one ball bearing left on the shaft. Weird.
Just werk bein done.
She drew first blood! This was the first of MANY times I hit that spot during this project. Ugh.
Gettin it done.
Ahhh, yes. The ever loathed "Bitch pin". What did I do to remove it? I simply used a screw driver Came out easy peasy.
And heres the installer: smaller screw driver with a 6-7mm socket. Worked like a charm!

Derp! Sumbudy sterle mah trany!
Luv dis.
Side project... I was showin my buddy Eli Skittles and needed to take off this portion of the console and found out my lil stereo cover wasnt broken at all!
Ta daa!
I didnt take many more pics as I was just tryin to get stuff done. But heres some before and afters of the bay.

Basically, I didnt have any problems, aside from the front tranny mount. Somehow, I cross threaded the hell out of one of the bolts. NONE of them fit right. I went so far as pulling one off Jelly to make sure I was usisng the right ones. None of em fit!
I said screw it and removed the whole mount. I'll worry about it later xD
Once I get another targa and get my leaky gas tank fixed, she will be on the road! Oh, yeah... Tranny shifts perfect. No issues at all. Overall, it took me about 5 Hrs. Thats taking my time and all by myself except for about 10 mins when I had a buddy help me actually mount the trans on the engine. Just too much for one person (without proper equipment).
Moar to come folks!
