3rd gear here too. my car is getting fixed as we speak. replacing syncrhos is not cheap either. i got flywheel/clutch to go with it. i think 3rd is most common and i really think it could be driver's fault too.

I shift fine. Never force it in and always use plenty of clutch. The problem is not my shifting. It is a poor design of a syncro that can not handle high rpms!

97 EX, my third sucks, grinds with clutch to the floor at over 3000 rpm, sometimes less. And second is also giving me some problems. I hate this crap, but an EX tranny is like only $180.

im beginning to think this is all driver, just like with clutch some people wear em out in 20k and others 50k and ive heard of people who race and have over 100k and still using stock clutch, all this is very interesting, i think it mush be driver tho.. i belive 2, 3rd gear take most abuse right? not like we race in 4, 5th all day long....... i dont know im still looking for some insight on my previous post up above

Ding ding..We have a winner
If I shift at anything below 7k rpm I never have any problems..Going above that will almost certainly grind going into 3rd..And above 8000 rpm it's all the time...
Why make a car with 8200 rev limit and then use a tranny with syncros that can't handle the high revs ?? I don't get it..And there's only 65k on my car and tranny..A friend of mine has the same problem..70k on his car and tranny..In short..Those syncros suck ***

same 3rd gear synro problem on my VW... so it's not just Honda, it's all the cars...
basically these cars are made with the "average" driver in mind and it's not made to handle the fast shifting. Any syncro repair will not solve the problem entirely unless we start shifting slower.
It just happens because syncros are not as fast as you, just take a little bit longer to shift and shift gently, this won't happen. If you don't change the syncro and keep driving like that, the gear itself will also go buh-bye....

yea my second gear is blown and grinds like a mother unless i double clutch, i cant even downshift into it without some major grindage either. my 4th and 5th grind only when shifting fast, im just gonna buy a new tranny since honda wants $350 per gear w/ synchros (pre assembled so you cant just buy synchros) plus another $150 for a rebuild (yea i know someone)

3rd Gear- $98
I would assume each gear costs about $100 as well as each syncro needed at $70.
I'm getting ready to do a full rebuild on my GSR tranny when summer hits. Hopefully I will get a new Final Drive too.
And don't act like it's honda's fault. Honda sets the industry standard for quality manual transmissions. If you have grinding problems, it's not the trannies fault, it's your driving habits. I too am guilty of misshifting a couple of times. **** happens...learn to drive is my only advice.
I always seem to miss 3rd gear at the drag strip. lol

Drag racing and beating the **** out of your tranny will kill your synchros quick. I hardly ever see anyone that does auto-x events or HPDE complain about synchros wearing out. Its mostly the guys that do drag. I know my tranny didnt start giving me problems until after I started taking my car to the strip.
Thats why I got smart and only take my car to find out if a new bolt on part is giving me any benefit. No need to just keep running the same times over and over and again and abuse your tranny if you only have a intake

my old b16 tranny..when i first got the motor the tranny would grind 3000-7000rpms at 2500-2900 or 7600-8000 it wouldnt grind weird huh..now ii got a jdm b16 tranny and this tranny will grind under 3k or over 7k..and all this is in 3rd gear, oh if racing (on track) 4th will grind slightly and so will 5th

Thats weird about the 3rd always going first. My 98 ls tranny is different. 1st gear is the worst, then 2nd, then 3rd, 4th and 5th are fine.

YES sycros SUCK... my third used to grind all the time, weird thing is, it seemd to have gotten better over time... go figure.?
