ok i got my b16 together and i am getting a sound from my timing belt area i was wondering how i can tell if my tensioner is bad the noise is like a loud whinning nosie let me know thank you guys

Could be your tensionor. It should be changed when the timing belt is changed because its a bitch and half to change it without need of a new timing belt.

I dont really know what to tell you because my friend has the same problem and its either the crankpully or his tensionor but its to hard to tell. So i would like to know how to tell without pulling the covers to the timing belt.

One way you could try is by putting a straight stick to the cover around the tensioner area and hold it to your ear and see if you hear it. HTH.

well i did the clean up of the engine when i got it you know like change the plugs cables and most important i changed my timing belt water pump and tensioner so maybe it is off or did i over tighten it or what it is not loud it is just a little annoying

If it is a loud whinning noise like when you raise rpm and noise goes VIUUUUUU VIUUUUUUU VIUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU - it is your belt tightened improperly (TOO TIGHT)

Good thing about Honda is that when your belt is overtightened it whinnes and when it's too loose it rattles and hits the plastic cover...

When the tensioner goes bad it produces a GRINDING/SCRATCHING NOISE, not whinning...

You can very easily determine that because BELT WHINNING NOISE sounds HEALTHY so to speak... but bad tensioner grinding noise DOES NOT SOUND HEALTHY at all...

I really don't know how else to describe it...

that works perfect man thanks for the heads up still have not had the chance to work on it so many other things going on god willing i can do it tomorrow and have my civic out on the road!!

I put one to tight before, Long Story, on a customers car, and on the civics they have a little hole to loosen or tighten the tensioner. well... I loosened it and then it jumped timing. What a pain in the ***. Practically did 2 timing belts on 1 car.

ok i took the time out today to look at it and i was shocked to see what i saw it was my timing belt lose as **** i was in shock but the bolt on the tensioner is really tight like it will not move type tight what could it be then? should i take the timing belt cover off and realign it or do i need a new one it is not making any noise from the area of it but the belt is slapping the plastic like KKVTi said but i am kind of stumped here let me know thanks guys

do i need to take the crank pulley off to get to the tensioner? is there away to do it with out taking it all apart?

Does your car run sluggish? Because I think I have that issue too.
When engine is cold my timing belt is loose. But after driving car when I check timing belt it is tight (when engine is hot). Is it normal?

i have no clue i don't want to drive it because i know the timing is going to jump and i will bend a valve or something like that so i want to get it right before i take it out. but what i need to know is when i do the thing over i thinki need to take the crank pulley off and re do the whole timing belt process but it sould like it is going to be a bytch to do because the engine is in already

If you want to replace the tensioner then YES, you must take off the crank pulley... it is like you change belt/tensioner/waterpump

But if you just want to adjust tension, you do not have to take off the pulley...

It's a DOHC so I am not 100% sure but on SOHC it is enough to take of the valve cover and the upper belt cover, loosen the tensioner and then adjust it and then retighten it...

Like I said, I don't know if it is the same with DOHC...

loosen it and re-tighten to specs!

a lot of guys overtighten the bolt thru the tensioner pulley thinking they added more tension to the belt, but they did not, they just risked stripping the tensioner pulley bolt threads in the aluminum block! in fact there is the tiny spring pulling on the pulley, that is the only thing putting tension on the belt.

so, once you loosen the tensioner (pulley bolt), the tensioner pulley spring puts the right mount of tension in the belt... once you follow the Honda suggested number of rotations of the crank pulley... (one?) and in the right direction... (counterclockwise!)

so losening the tensioner and then redoing it is going to work? the only reason why i am saying no is because it seems like the bolt is not in straight now that i have the valve cover off or that impossible?

Hmmmm... it can be that someone who was replacing the belt and the tensioner simply tightened it INCORRECTLY...

Cos if you loosen the bolt, the tensioner would not follow the bolt pattern and move out straight... it will become loose and it will bend (kinda)

So when you loosen the bolt, ONLY loosen it 180 degrees... not more, not less... just a half turn...

Here's the instruction page from Civic manual... I assume that the DOHC is the same like someone said it is...
