How do I make my 97 DX hatch faster?

The only thing you need is the y8 head, knock sensor, y8 ecu (or you could just wire yours for VTEC and the knock sensor) and IIRC, you need to re - wire your IACV. The tranny, and intake are just better options if you want to, not required.

If I where you id save up for a swap. I had a d16y8 with i/h/e and it was hella slow! So i got me a jdm sirII b16 =]
Best choice i ever made lol. But if your looking to save money just throw a vtec head on and maybe a chipped ecu for fun =]

DIY Mini me swap:
D16 Mini Me Swap Write Up
Keep in mind that just the mini me swap isn't going to give you that much.
Once you do the swap, you might as well go turbo. If you're thinking that you'll probably not boost it, then you might as well just swap a B series and save yourself some time.

I've heard of sites that sell full engines and have a decent shipping rate - are these legit? I'm all for craigslist but whenever I see a b series it's either missing something (or several things) or has high miles. Any recommended places to look?
For this being my first civic, I didn't realize how much time/money/decisions were going to be involved in building it. So many options that I don't want to get bored with my car and blowing a few grand

I'm not sure if I'd boost it, for the amount spent on doing the mini-me and boosting i'm guessing itd be around the same price as swapping.

Just make sure you do it right the first time when buying upgrades or any changes for that matter, Ive wasted money on stuff because i either didnt buy OEM parts or just cut corners. I hardly drive the civic anymore since i got my bike and now that its winter ill be driving the durango. Anywho, Good luck with your choices and any upgrades that you do.

Hey look man, you dont have to swap to be fast. Those little d16's are very strong and you can make very decent power out of them. For 3k, you can be pushing around 400hp as long as you know how to do some work yourself or have some good friends who know what they are doing.
Our shop has the single cam recipe, push 400 all day on d-series. Most people have it in their mind that bigger is better...but thats definitely not always the case... why do you think we boost hondas! to show all the muscle heads that you dont need more than a 2L motor to go fast.
Best thing of all.... most people throw d16s in the trash... parts are real easy to come by and after market parts and builds are very cheap...
So if your looking for a quick hatch on a serious budget, stick with the single slammer and show everyone up with your 1.6!!

I'd love to just build this motor but I don't even know where to start - why I was strongly thinking about starting with a mini-me swap.

do a mini-me swap ,it'll make you happy. do yourself a favor and get a used d-series engine that doesn't run, tear it down and build it up until you know whats up. thats what i did w/ a b21a1, now i have two rebuilds(b21a1,b18a1) and four swaps (d15b,h22,b18b,ka24de) under my belt!

I did go for the d16 because those good motor and not too costly. The b-series need higher octane fuel.. Gas prices not cheap..
