Nice write up... Got a question though, are there only two parts i would need to get in order to install a cabin filter? Where can I aslo get the civic cabin air filter frame from?

Two things I would need in to install this
1. Cabin Air Filter*:
- '97-'01 CR-V / '00-'06 Insight Cabin Air Filter
---
2. '97-'01 CR-V / '00-'06 Insight / '96-'00 EDM civic cabin air filter frame

thing i dont understand is, if the filter is on the passenger side, behind the glove box, why do u need to take off the center part by the 12v outlet and the piece under the steering wheel?

Already answered on the bottom of page one.

No. Not as far as I'm aware at least. EDM VTis from those years don't have them, so I doubt any of them did.

Everything needed is listed. The CR-V and Insight parts are sold in the US because they came in USDM models. So you can go to Autozone and order the filter and Honda to order the frame. I even listed the part numbers for you.

The Civic parts ARE THE SAME PART NUMBER as the parts I listed unless otherwise noted. And the parts are the same nonetheless.

Also already answered on page one.

There is one 8mm bolt that is difficult to get to on the left side of the bar that's under the glovebox. You need to remove the bar to access the filter.

In order to reach that one 8mm bolt, you need to remove the middle piece. And in order to remove the middle piece, you need to remove the driver's side piece.

while you were down there.. you could've also disconnected the blower motor, and clean that out..

lots of crap gets stuck there...

it helps if you use a small socket.. because its hard getting a screwdriver down there.. to drop the motor

Not a whole lot gets stuck in the blower motor. I've cleaned mine out before after a long fall, and the most was a couple pine needles and some leaves.

I have luckily never really had leaves coming out of my vents. I can't remember it ever having happened at least. It has happened a few times in Eran's (which does not have an evaporator), but not mine.

So I doubt there would even be much, if anything in my blower.

Nice! How did you find out about this? I have asked around and always been told "No way" I ended up doing a kind of ghetto rigged filter on the blower motor, but I like this better. Thanks NOFX!

I was on a Dutch site and saw someone else's how to for changing the filter (they have the filters in their cars already). I've always wanted one, so I started lokoing around to see if they were the same parts.

I have the EDM EPC and it shows that at least certain Civics in Europe have this. I compared part numbers and they matched US numbers for other models.

The EPC shows the seal and the frame separately, but after buying the frame I found out that the seal is already included.

What does the stock filter look like that you removed, is it just a metal mesh without some sort of filter element?

Would it be possible to gut the stock one, and put a fitting filter inside it? I haven't ever pulled out the filter .

Thanks

Just an update to anyone that tries this. The separate filter frame is on backorder status from Honda, so the only way to do it now is to buy the complete assembly for more money

Do you mean the filter assembly? Looks lik it just includes the filter frame, seal (which my filter frame came with a seal) and the filter. So basically, it just forces you to buy the Honda filter instead of an aftermarket one. So, not too bad, but it keeps you from saving some cash.

I meant the frame by itself. Anyhow, I just did this today and it worked out great. Thanks for the helpful writeup, it was useful at someplaces. Alot of crap in there and as Amy said, airflow actually increases along with quality of the air

Oh, and on a final note, its VERY apparent that there shouldve been one there from the factory.

To give everyone an idea of what this filter will catch, here is a dirty filter from a European Civic.

And I believe this is a charcoal filter btw.

What am I missing here?!?!?

If I buy the assembly package, it's $40.27...

If I buy the parts separately, it's only $28.54...

Things you are missing:

1) The frame by itself is on backorder from Honda.

2) I listed the exact part numbers you need along with the list prices in the first post. The list price for the entire frame and all components besides the filter is $13.74.

3) HondaPartsCheap apparently should be renamed to HondaPartsPricedtoRipYoutheFreakOff.

great writeup, next time i get out of the fields, and get up to the big city, ill have to stop by the honda dealership and get these things on the way. i dont have any leaves or anything blowing out, but i hope this will help from having dirt and dust blowing up when i drive down a gravel road.

Great find Amy!

I love how simply universal Hondas are across the board. Makes these kinds of upgrades possible!

Too bad us 5th gen guys are still screwed. I hate how messed up evaporator cores get without these filters!
