i had a friend of a friend (knew him, and his car) had a mustang, removed the front sway bar (helps with hookup in RWD cars) went around a corner and because of how much the car tilted, cop gave him an unsafe speed ticket, saying he went around the corner too fast, pulled over 3-4 times for it, but only got a ticket once, after that he would just remove it when he went to the track (every 2 weeks) which sucked for him, but this was 14-15 years ago...

so pigs hate on the american iron too...

as for pigs thos,
DE state cops, give them respect, and they return it,
DE/New Castle County pigs, dont bother they dont give respect to no one...

Even if they did, why would it matter? Our state is really laid back on that stuff. We don't even have emissions testing. lol

I can't think of anything under the hood that could get you in trouble. Unless you were using nitrous... but that would only matter if you had the bottle hooked up to the other end.

Oh ok. Either way though, you don't have to have it on there by law.

It depends on the cop. My friend is cop in socal and I ask him everything. Well if that cop pulled you over for no apparent reason then he is obviously not doing his job. But the many excuses that they will give you is "your car looks modified" but then again how is he to know or put up a definition for what a "modified" car looks like?

Here what you should do. Ask him why are you being pulled over? if that cop is lying through his teeth on why he pulled you over then I would just let him give me a ticket and take it to court to fight the case. Its the best way. Its better then not complying with the officer and getting shot or going to jail. But then again dont give up your rights either. Cops will try and trick you into giving up your rights.

i live in cali as well. i got pulled over a few weeks ago for "playing excessively loud music" when i really wasnt. cop asked me to pop my hood. So i did then i asked him if he liked my CARB legal aem cai and he said something but couldnt understand what he said. then looks at my painted red painted valve cover and told me thats not legal and thought wow really dude, but doesnt mention anything about my exhaust or how low i am. so i got pretty lucky. but cali cops love to mess with honda's. im about ready to get out of the honda scene. this is rediculous

I mean that sucks and all but you guys choose to live there... I have had super loud exhaust on all of my cars and have never been pulled over... I would never live anywhere that would inhibit my love of modifying cars...

There is plenty of room here in FL guys... and there are many other places you can live without having to deal with these things... I lived in MD most of my life which is an extremely liberal state, it is ranked the 5th worst state in terms of personal freedom (right behind CA)... but I never had any issues getting profiled for what I drove up there...

One time my car got vandalized and the cop and I ended up talking about his GSR for about an hour...

I think that the LA area seems to be more known for people modifying Hondas and street racing than pretty much anywhere else. Probably why they get hassled for it more, because there's way more of it.

We have ZERO limitations and emissions here in Michigan too.
A long time ago, vehicles used to have to pass the sniffer.
They got rid of that and said you just had to have a cat.
Now you don't even need a cat. You can run straight pipe or
do whatever the hell you want.

I've had loud cars. Either from the exhaust system
being shitty and rusted out or from just a loud exhaust
system and I've never been pulled over for it. You have
more of a chance of getting pulled over in Detroit for having
something obstructive hanging from your rear view mirror
than you do having a loud exhaust. I got pulled over once
in a ridiculously loud Civic for having a giant, spider web
crack in my windshield and the exhaust was never even
mentioned. And it had fell off from the cat all the way back!

I couldn't imagine having to pop my hood and be interrogated
about my car or it's engine. Constantly driving in fear of the
KGB car police. I feel for you guys. That seriously sounds more
like another country to me. And not a good one.

I'm quite sure that Joseph Stalin is still alive and running
California from behind a curtain.

Just making a general statement. You reminded me how much I hate seeing Civics with loud exhaust driving around. I was thinking out loud. lol

Wrong. Catalytic converters are required in every state by federal law. (IDK if this applies or not to cars that did not come from the factory with them)

"Please note that Federal law prohibits removal or replacement of a properly functioning O.E. converter."

Its not hard to become a cop but it is hard to be a cop... Whether you like it or not their job is difficult and dangerous... Its really the higher ups that determine what they go after... CA uses the import scene to generate revenue since the state is doing so **** poor financially...

Being a cop isn't really a desirable job because of the rough hours, danger of the job, and pathetically low pay... A lot of undesirable people or people who have issues become cops because you don't really need any skills going into it besides basic physical and mental fitness... Most of the higher paying jobs are taken up by people who have special skills...

I respect cops as a whole even though there are plenty of bad ones out there... But put yourself in their position, long hours and crappy pay, you would probably be a dick sometimes too...

The cops where I came from in MD were really cool... They were only out to get drunk drivers and real criminals...

Right on. My bad.

Okay, The Million Dollar Question -

Muffler shops (the big boys, not mom-n-pop) have offered
to run straight pipes on my car in the past. Hell, even up
to ten years ago. I know a few people who have gone ahead
with straight pipes from some of these shops.
How can they get away with this?

That's why I thought they just scrapped that law.

The shop that I went to in MD said that they were not allowed to modify a cat on a car that wasn't 8 years old or had 80,000 miles on it...

I fell your pain.
My car does look really modified, with the Wings West body lip kit, slammed, big brakes, 17" wheels....and driving up to see my family in Santa Barbara a CHP in Santa Barbara pulled me over. I didn't understand why, since I was in traffic and not going faster than 45mph. The cop tells me that I had a rear tail light out.

hmmmm.....

He asks to see my license/registration...etc....

Then tells me my tach is illegal cause it can block my view....WTF? Its on the A pillar and blocks my view of what, my hood? LOL

So then he asks to pop my hood. Of course then he looks like...OMG...cause I have a turbo kit and a "show" nitrous system, which I point out doesn't have anything connected to it and that I have E.O. #'s for every modified part. He gives me flack for no front license plate, which I pull out of my back seat and tell him that I had a photo shoot and had taken it off.

He lets me go. Probably since I was about 30 at the time, knew what I was talking about, and gave him my business card for being a mechanical engineer at Edelbrock, which made most of my aftermarket parts.

But, what pissed me off, is when I got home I still wondered about the tail light. So I asked my mom to hop in and step on the brakes....wow....ALL THE LIGHTS WORKED!

mother F'er!

Next time, if a cop tells you that you have a tail light out, as the reason for pulling you over, ask him to hop in and step on the brake, so you can have a look. If that ever happens again, he's getting a letter written to his boss, and the city with his badge #.
