Help me find out what is coming out of my middle vents!?!?!
I would search but since I don't know what this is search terms are not working out so great. Since I purchased my car about a month ago I have noticed this foam like crap coming out of the center vents. When you touch it, it breaks right apart like it's "dry rotted" or crumbling. I figured it may be the cabin filter falling apart but then I found out these cars don't have them. Or do they?
Sorry for the sub par pics....

Looks like the foam crap that sits between the air duct in the dash and the one that goes to the vents on the center console piece.

It's a 97 so unsure of the "e"?
Also, I plan to take the middle bezel off this weekend to see if there is anything I get too. Is there a how to or a DIY for how to do this somewhere on the site? Not sure of what to really search for...

The foam seals between a lot of places for the hvac system. You'll have to pull the dash to pull it all out. Maybe find some really thin weather stripping or something to replace it with.

There is something wrong with my HVAC so it's either all or nothing. That's mainly why I've noticed this stuff bc I don't turn my a/c off so it's always on 4.

Why would they? It's about as vague a description of a problem that I've seen. "something wrong" and "all or nothing" tells me zip. When do you notice that it works? When does it NOT work?

If I were you I'd probably start at the easiest places instead of pulling the entire dash, which is a job in itself.
When you remove the black climate control bezel section (don't try to pry the vents off of it - they will break!) there will be foam around the "joint" where that piece connects to the vent ducts in the dash. Replace that with new foam of some sort.
Remember you said that it's just coming from the middle vents, so it can't be ALL of the foam in the system. That stuff might be on it's way out soon, but in my experience most of the foam that falls apart is the easier to reach stuff. There is some in the blower assembly too, if you want to check that (there are DIYs in this section - it's behind the glovebox).
What do you mean exactly? You didn't really say what's wrong with your system.
Do you mean it only operates on the "4" setting?
If so, then it might be a bad blower motor resistor, which should be somewhere near your blower assembly. It will probably cost iirc $30 from Autozone? These get old and tend to go bad.

You could just do a stage 1 weight reduction and take out your A/C components haha joke. But i will say. i live in FL also and i have never had A/C in my EG...you get used to the heat, and you'll have all the space you could ever need for a Turbo lol

I personally would LOVE to have the a/c components for my '88 HF. Unfortunately it never came with them originally and no one added them before I bought the car. Wouldn't have needed them in WA, but it'd be nice to have here in DE with the humidity.
If I want to turbo later I can work around a/c components.
