So it was sunday afternoon and i was just leaving an autox event and 2 min later i get pulled over for a loud exhaust. This boggles my mind because for one i have a GREDDY SP2 exhaust. And im sure we can all agree that this exhaust is pretty damn quiet. For those of you who dont know what it looks like....




Second i just replaced all the gaskets for the exhaust literally the night before so there is definetly no holes or exhaust leakage. AND my exhaust piping is only 2.5 with a oem cat. I have no idea what the cop was hearing honestly but he gave me a $75 fix it ticket and told me to get a silencer when greddy doesnt even make that **** for an SP2 (unless im mistaken).

I dont know about you guys but i think its bull **** for me to have to pay the 75 so im going to contest it but HERES MY QUESTION:

How do i prove to them that its "fixed"? I was thinking of just taking a picture of some silencer in my exhaust just to show that its in there. lol but i dont know. But seriously my exhaust is not loud at all and its pretty close to the sound of a apexi WSII. Any other suggestions are appreciated!

Does the ticket say loud exhaust or aftermarket? I got pulled over and he said my exhaust is loud and on the ticket it said aftermarket. I was confused there.

edit: didn't notice you were in IL, but if you can get someone to do the same kind of test... and also find out what the actual limit is, you can make a pretty good case.

i hate when that happens.. when i had a skunk2 with a silencer it was just mellow but the cop still said it was loud.. that sucks maybe you can fight it in court and be like you wanna take a dB test and prove that its good

I can see how the officer might have thought it's loud. See if you can find the law for how loud it can be and then see if you can get yours measured somewhere.

in CA any exhuast has to be under 94db...not sure how it is in IL but try getting your exhaust tested.

you sure he didnt confuse the exhuast for the intake thats what happen to me i got pulled over when i had the WS2 and i told the officer its not my exhuast its my intake i had the Password jdm intake aka Whale ***** so he made me pop my hood and he said "holy **** well that thing is huge" and i said thank you and i explained him y the call it a whale ***** he found it funny and let me go

In my area, we get ticket for having modified exhaust even if we have the complete OEM exhaust line ...



And sometime people loose on court !!!

I got a ticket for my Apexi N1 a while ago when I had it. Went to the ref, and got it passed by the Db test. Brought the paperwork with me into court to show it did not need to be fixed, and they dropped it.

Just take it to get Db tested, and you'll pass with your SP2, then do the same. Out here, the limit is 92 Db. If yours is similar over there, you ought to be fine.

hey ive gotten plenty of those, [freak]in elgin, batavia, chicago, aurora, geneva, st charles, and kane county cops. The best part was when i got pulled over 2 month ago on a saturday night on my way home from my gf's house at about 12 am and i drove by doing the speed limit past a kane county and then he gave me a warning but demanded that he search my car wtf, bull ****

the cop had no proof, i dont do drugs (anymore) and there were no alcoholic or such related items in the car that gave the cop reasonable cause to search my car. So since i was tired and my phone was dead, i complied just so that i wouldnt possibly b arrested or ticketed, but hey im filing a complaint now with the kane county sheriffs and they arent gonna b happy i have one hell of a lawyer and im paying out the ***

dont know about out there but in maryland you cant alter your exhaust at all doesnt matter how loud it is. If the cop wants to give you a ticket for it they can.

in illinois any exhaust modification is illegal, but it all depends on the officer. ive been pulled over 5 times and only once did i get ticketed for loud exhaust which was dropped in court...and my exhaust is unholy loud

A couple of people already suggested a db test...

Basically, if or when you fight it in court, you'll have to prove to the judge at the time you appear that it does pass. NOT after you appear.

I know it does cost money just to prove your "innocent" but hey, at least it should theoretically help you out if you get pulled over again for the same thing.

I made the mistake of thinking I could show the judge the carb legal codes on my intake and save myself the $35 smog fee. But they still took the damn cop's word that it was illegal.

if cops see bling... Thats they're probable cause whether the car is loud or not. They dont always go by the books themselves. Its too easy to bend over a tuner and write hime up tickets...

I had a cop tell me once "I can ticket you or arrest you for anything. YOU have to prove infront of a judge that I am wrong"


In maine you technically "cannot" alter the exhaust from how it comes from the factory. We have to get our cars inspected every year and they check that and are cracking down super hard. If you contest it in court they will probably be like "Is the exhaust aftermarket" and then bam, you still have to pay the ticket. Try and talk to the DA before you go in and see if he can reduce it. Thats what I always end up doing.
