On going ignition problem w/ 98 honda civic LX
Hey so here is my ongoing problem.. I posted this back in Sep 09'..
Hey Guys! So I own a 98' Honda Civic LX. Last week I started to notice that when I turned over my engine, my car was a little shakey. Shakey as in, the car shook/vibrated. Once I would give the car gas, it would idle fine. It also starts to idle fine if I just let the engine idle for awhile. There are no significant problems when I am driving or idling at a stop. This problem only happens when I first turn over my engine. I used my OBDII Scanner to see what error codes come up and there were 4: P0300, P0301, P0303, P0304. This is what the Scanner Manual said they were:
P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
Last year I changed my spark plugs, wires, fuel pump, timing belt. I have searched online for what the problem could be/how to fix it and it seems kinda ambiguous and was wondering what others would suggest. Please Help! Thanks alot!
Then I changed my spark plugs again and my Check Engine light went out for about a week and went off and on for a few months. The last month it has stayed on and sometimes it blinks. It has gotten worse and it takes multiple tries to turn over engine, but is still really shakey for first minute. It turns over normal sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. With the post I did in Sep 09', a person mentioned to get new distributor cap and rotor... so i did... the problem still continued and I changed my spark plug wires as well.. still the CE light is on and the car shakes at start time to time... What else could be my issue do you think?

Well its clear that you have multiple misfires a curing. Did you check the spark plugs? Its ether a spark issue or a fuel issue. Try taking the fuel rail off to check and see if the injectors are clogged. Also run injector cleaner. Sounds like a fuel issue to me good luck

I changed the spark plugs back when the initial issue came. Should I change them again to see or would you suspect a fuel issue?

If you have new plugs in then leave them, pull all cylinders plugs out and inspect it (http://www.cixikaifeng.com/products_...k_Analysis.jpg). If all looks ok im leaning toward a fueling issue. Try and run the fuel cleaner first that may solve your problem, if not pull the rail off and inspect the injectors. When people have misfires they normal point right toward ignition forgetting about fuel.

New spark plugs seemed to have done the trick that last time. I wonder if you're using the NGK plugs, or whichever ones that Honda recommends. I've seen cold start issues due to crappy bosch and champion plugs. It would make sense since it runs fine after it's warmed up.
What I usually do is throw in a set of OEM spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor and then go from there if I need to. Spark plugs have effective hot and cold temps. From experience, this has almost always fixed the problem. My rule of thumb is, Honda's and Toyota's are picky when it comes to the Ignition System, stick to the OEM parts and go from there. Good luck.
