Default gauge cluster/ac lights and clock problems PLEASE HELP!

I have a little situation on my hands, I have done massive research and I think I narrowed down the issue. Just want yalls opinion on it and hopefully a resolution just in case this happens to anyone else.

92 civic si with an obd1 gsr dash. The gauge cluster light, a/c control lights and the clock are not working. The cluster rpm/mph/gas/temp work fine, the a/c unit works, and nothing on the clock

The radio, tail lights, turn signals, headlights all work. The only issues are the ones stated above.

All fuses have been checked both under dash and engine bay. Its not the cluster lights, has been swapped. I have read about the dimmer switch going bad and causing the lights to go out but I have never heard of it causing an issue with the clock. Voltage at the clock is 4.5, and if I turn the lights on it jumps to 12. But when I use the dimmer switch it doesn't change the voltage.. I have tested with another clock, same thing.

im in the process of trying to obtain a dimmer switch, but in the mean time any other ideas?

yea it deff sounds like the dimmer. i had the same problem with my 92 SI so i changed it & worked perfectly fine.

as for the voltage id say just get a higher fuse that can handle the voltage going threw

Update... im in trouble.

swapped the dimmer switch with a known working one, nothing. time for a little more background.

bought the car from a guy who had an obd2 dash harness in the car, all hacked up but working. No cluster lights either, he ran a 12v wire straight to the cluster to illuminate it. Since then I have took out the dash put in an obd1 harness and spliced the 1 gray plug into the fusebox, EVERYthing is working except the clock and instrument lights.. all fuses are good, dash/engine bay. Anyone know what wire I need to start tracing? please help! thanks

do you have power to the clock? one should be straight from the battery, hot all the time, one ground, and the other is ignition. Have you checked the ground for the clock? It could be tied together with the instrument illumination ground as well.

When you turn the lights on with the combo switch, do you have power to the dimmer? good ground from the dimmer?

well know dont I feel like a jackA$$

I got the dimmer switch and put it in when I got home from work 5pm. look very close but didnt see any lights. I just went back outside to check all this stuff you asked and the flippen cluster/ac lights were on!!! I about wet myself. and the dimmer works. Only problem left is the clock. Here goes

keys out
bat to ground 12v

ign on
bat to ground 12v
and ign 4.5 volts.

tried two clocks, same thing. the dimmer had no effect on the voltage readings. thanks again

update.

I reinstalled the dash and hooked everything back up, cluster lights and a/c lights are now working due to the dimmer being replaced.

The clock however is very strange. With the car on or off, doesnt matter, I can press the front plate and the time will show. Even if im pressing that and turn on the lights it goes dim, but when the car on the time will not show unless pressing that button. Like im not getting any voltage off the ign wire or something.. not sure.

other issues im faceing. on the cluster non of the individual lights show, engine, oil, open door, ebrake. only the battery and brights. anyone clue on this one? happened on the old cluster to.

Hi,

I am a new/used owner of a 97 and I believe I am having the same issue with my Heater/AC panel lights. All the other lights are fine except for these. How easy is it to R/R the light dimmer switch?

In your case it its just the climate control the doesn't light i'd actually check the bulbs first. I've never seen a del sol interior in person (there is exactly one del sol in my town and its owned by an old lady) but the 5th gen civics only use 2 bulbs which in all likelyhood have never been replaced, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for both of them to have burned out by now, i've seen 5th gen civics do this.

yeah definitely check those bulbs.

So, I figured out my problem!!!! I started checking voltage in plug "d" behind the harness and port 4 or 5 its a yellow wire which is the power for the cluster, no voltage. Checked power at fuse 15 which is basically that yellow wire, had power. Traced the yellow wire and found it was cut!!! spliced back together and now EVERYTHING WORKS!!! even the clock. Im so happy I can put my car back together again. Thanks everyone for your help!
