hi all.....i've been a member for some time, and this would be the first time i post pics of my ride.....i've included a little tech as well so i dont get flamed....

and now for the tech......i've been asked numerous times how i did the valve cover
1. remove valve cover
2. strip valve cover of it's paint using Aircraft Remover or any Peeler type spray
3. make sure NO old black paint gets inside the valve cover....you will need to thorouly clean it on the inside as well
4. find some red Scotch Brite scuff pads and scuff the surface of the VC
5. use masking tape to mask the spark plug holes and the oil filler cap hole
6. i didnt use a primer, but you could go with a hi-temp primer if you wanted to
7. use Dupli-Color High Performance wheel coating for the paint.....i use it becuase it has an improved resistance to chemicals, solvent, and chipping....it is also heat resistant (you can find it at any autozone, and i used Graphit Grey)
8. spray 1 thin coat of the paint onto the valve cover, let it set for about 10 mins
9. spray another coat of the paint onto the cover (note: it will not look like it's covering, but that's ok, it's better to have SEVERAL thin coats than one big heavy coat that will sag or drip)
10. after about 3-5 coats, let the paint set for about 30 mins....
11. after this time, use Dupli-Color wheel coating (clear) to add a lusterous clear coat, once again several small coats rather than one heavy....
12. allow it to dry (may take 4-8 hours depending on temp, just let it cure overnight)

i know that there will be some concerns on it cracking or peeling over time while the motor is hot, but i've had the paint for about 1 month now, and NO signs of any fading/peeling....

also, just out of curiousity......i went to the track last weekend and ran it for the first time......STOCK LS internals, CAI, DC 4-1 header, and a custom 2.25 exhaust with ES oval muffler......i ran on 40%treaded 205/55/15" tires and got a best of

RT- .899
60'- 2.309
330- 6.327
1/8- 9.659
mph- 74.35
1000- 12.537
1/4- 14.993
mph- 91.26

any suggestions on what could get me into mid-14's??? thanks

Better tires, you need to lower those 60' times. That will help a little.

Other than cut a better 60 time obviously....

What about tire pressure? What PSI are you running?

How much gas in the tank, run about 1/4 tank to avoid excess weight obviously and make sure your car is clean...

Have you dynoed the car and seen where your best power band is? If so, you should know when to shift to land right back at your power band.

Thats all I can think of.

30psi in the tires, i had about 1/2 tank of gas, and i took passenger seat out as well as spare......i weight 184lbs, and i was nervous as hell, becuase this was my first time at the track

try 20 psi in the tyres.
also throw a turbo on the ls motor

1st time jitters may have played a role. Sometimes youll get antsy and not shift when you know you should or something. Anything like that?

Like the guy up there said, drop it to around 20-22 PSI because youre probably getting crappy grip with 40% thread AND your tires inflated. (Remember, 30 PSI is great for daily driving but not for drag racing.)

This may have been a freak occurance (I'm not an exhaust expert and certainly not a drag racing expert) but I know of a guy who ran open header and pulled almost a tenth off his time with the same 60 foot time.

He might have just ran a better run but you never know, something to try. If you can stand the noise.

Yeah i run 19 or 20 psi in my tires.

c'mon man....stock ls in a hatch running 1/4- 14.993.....that is a nice time...and your 60' could be improved upon.....your motor is healthy, and yur driver is healthy.....I cant recall anyone with the same setup doing any better.....and some had slicks.

I usually run 15psi in my tires at the strip, regardless of the vehicle. My S10's tires were 50psi recommended and I dropped em down to 15. Cut .4 seconds off my beautiful virgin run of 17.0 flat . (i.e. it went down to 16.4)

looks like you need to work on your reaction time too .899 is a tad high can cut .3 off your time if you get that down to a .599 reaction time

Your 60' are very high.

I had an LS w/GSR tranny and itr mid pipe and ran a 14.72 no intake or header. It was in a 92 dx hatch.

eidt: my 60' were 2.1's on street tires, in fact bald steelies.

Looks nice. Now grab yourself a B16 tranny and put the side cover on your engine so a rock doesnt take out your timing belt and youll be good to go.
