Re: FAQ: Axle Replacement Tutorial With PICS!
I have the same problem, I just replaced my axle cuz it broke the other night. I put in a "new" axle and I get a **** ton of vibration only when accelerating. None what so ever when I am coasting, or even giving it a little bit of gas. Like less than 10%.
could some one please help me!!!!

Re: FAQ: Axle Replacement Tutorial With PICS!
Hope someone can help me out here with info.
Have searched and cant seem to find an answer.
Will be replacing both axles due to a knocking noise when I turn either way. And was wondering if i had 89 SI hubs (26 spline) from a HB and wanted to go with 90-93 teg axles, if it would work in a 91 STD 4 speed? Or would I be better off to use 90-93 teg hubs?
Really don't want to just get OEM replacements, do to the fact that I will be attempting a B18 swap within the year, would just be money wasted?
Any inputs or ideas would be appreciated, PM's are welcome.
Thanks in advanced!

You can use either the Si or Integra knuckles and hubs, if you use integra knuckles you will need to use the large integra front brakes. If you're still running the 4 speed D-series tranny you'll need some DX/Si axles until you go b-series.

I'm changing axles this weekend because the boots are leaking. Is there anything special that needs to be done on the drivers side with the halfshaft? Almost every tutorial I see talks about the passenger side.
Do I need to remove the halfshaft to replace the axle?

Anyone happen to have the part number for that Axel Nut? The one on this civic im working on is completely mangled, they felt the need to DIMPLE it all the way around with a punch. I still havent been able to get it off even me a 2ft breaker 300ftlb impact short burst, ALL I WANT TO DO IS CHANGE THE BALL JOINTS.
Taking it to a Suspension Place Monday. goodbye $

Took both sides in had them dissasembled, Mechanic had to use the torches he said, got new ball joints in, cost $80 CAD pretty good deal if it saves me from swearing at it for another hour and a half.

Re: FAQ: Axle Replacement Tutorial With PICS!
I just wanted to say Thanks. I'm not afraid of a little work -- I've replaced engines, head gaskets, clutches, etc on a variety of cars -- but this tutorial made this project a piece of cake! I had the local service station break the nuts loose (I was bending my 3/4" drive breaker bar!), and the rest was easy. For putting it back, Advance Auto's tool rental had the socket in their "axle nut" kit. I especially liked your tip for putting in the oil!
Thanks again!

Re: FAQ: Axle Replacement Tutorial With PICS!
excellent write up!
i donno if this has been mentioned yet but put in bold letter to make sure the axle is securely inserted into the transmission! mine on my drivers side still had about 3/4cm till it was fully engauged. i took it for a test spin only to have half my transmission fluid fly out underneath. luckily nothing else was damanged. went back and hammered the sucker flush with the transmission, threw in some fresh fluid and all is good.

FWIW, hammering the lower arm didn't work , I used the wrench method to pop the balljoints as shown in this tutorial

Re: FAQ: Axle Replacement Tutorial With PICS!
2ft breaker bar and no dice. I did notice though that the passenger side axle nut took a 31mm socket while the drivers side took a 32mm. Any clue as to how this happened? I seriously doubt that you can put a 31mm axle nut where a 32mm would go.
Any suggestions on how to get this nut off without having to take it to a shop? I don't have the money right now to do that but I really need to change these axles. Shake at anything over 60-65mph.

When I was getting integra brakes from the salvage yard, I had to use the breaker bar and actually hop on it to break the nut loose.

Re: FAQ: Axle Replacement Tutorial With PICS!
Thank you for the write up...my 97 HX, D16Y5 had a severe knocking sound when turning (in addition to many other issues I've fixed, since coming here to Honda-tech) and when I changed the oil again, I saw that the boots were pretty much shredded. Don't know how, probably from field mice out here on the farm where I live. In addition, the balancer that sits in the middle of the axle was all the way down, off of its little securing ring thingy...soooooo ya I'm about to walk outside and replace those right now. Thank you again!

Re: FAQ: Axle Replacement Tutorial With PICS!
Two things I did when I changed an axle recently.
I had the car on jackstands when I remembered that I hadn't broken the hub nut loose. I put a screwdriver through the caliper into the vanes of the rotor to hold the axle still while I worked on the hub nut.
Used a 6 foot long pipe to ruin two breaker bars on the 32mm hub nut. Then wailed on it with a Chicago electric impact wrench. Did not budge. I ended up using a cutoff wheel to put two big grooves in the nut. Nut got very hot and maybe released some strain. The electric impact then spun it off.
Whew.
