Default Easiest Brake Master Cylinder Upgrade Yet for 1992-1995 Civics...

***EDIT***

*I'm sure I'm not the first guy to discover this mod, and I'm not trying to sound as though I came up with the idea. Another H-T member told me that they've heard of this mod, so I just took it further and actually ordered one at my shop and put it on a customer's 1993 CX to test it - it works.*

Well for all of you guys running 4-wheel discs and/or bigger front discs that need a bigger-than-stock 13/16ths M/C, there is a true bolt-in replacement for sure.

I heard a rumor that a certain 15/16ths m/c just bolted up, and it's true. I ordered one the other day and my shop put on ein a 1993 Cx hatch. It's a:

1991 Honda Civic EX 4-door master cylinder.

The part number from Honda is 46100-SH4-A11. They probably won't stock it, but it only took me one full day to get the one I ordered.

This m/c bolted right up to the stock Civic booster, so no more trying to find an Integra booster and m/c combo!

The only thing is that I cannot say which stops better - my Integra RS booster and m/c combo, or the 1991 EX with stock Civic booster because the CX we did the EX m/c on still had stock brakes to be upgraded with all Integra discs later.

The 1991 EX m/c is the same 15/16ths like my Integra Rs, but the ears are located the same as the stock Civic so there's no need for the Integra booster. the Integra booster is larger volume, but I've yet to determine if the Teg booster makes much difference over stock until, this CX guy gets his 4-wheel discs and 40/40 prop valve.

So if you want an easy m/c upgrade with no booster worries, try this one.

Good to know Tom. Makes me reconsider having to do the Integra Master and booster.

Hmnn interesting.. But I wouldnt tell everyone to get it just yet until you are able to get more research in.. Having not to change boosters might be a plus for some of us with less engine space than others.. hehe

Seriously though good find. Keep me posted on how this works out. I have to do a brake upgrade soon anyways..

I just checked the dealer price on this jewel. 194.50 retail. I can get them a bit cheaper, with my employee discount. aprox -$150-160. plus shipping.

Good find, Thanks

**pics to help show that this is an easy swap, it take me longer to change my oil and filter than to swap this MC out **
The usual 13/15" MC we are used to seeing in a 1995 Civic Si

Removing the original MC brake lines.

Original MC removed completly.

Side by side view of both MC units.

Close up of the 13/15" line connections.

Close up of the 15/16" line connections, same as the 13/15" MC connections.

The new (larger) 15/16" MC installed.

i jsut checked on http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com and they were $143.00

i fiugre that the 91 crx SI has to be the same also since they came with 4 disk brakes and no ABS...

but the crx MS is $150 , they had differnet part number on the site so i figure thats the reason why they were differnt prices...

Sorry but the EX has 10.3" brakes and the CRX does not. CRX has a smaller one.

Awesome info, thanks! Would it be bad to put that on before I get my rear discs on? I have gs-r fronts right now

Actually it would be fine w/o the rear discs.

A buddy of mine did the RS non ABS 15/16ths m/c and booster combo with just upgraded front brakes to GS-R specs and his car stops killer. Rear discs just help with the braking balance, but in a straight line the cars with 4-wheel discs probably stop about the same as the ones with the same big brakes up front and rear drums.

since it's from a '91 it can be bought from any parts store for alot less than the dealer. i'm sure the ones from the dealer are rebuilt models as well.

hell if you wanted to be a real cheap *** buy one from a yard and get the master cylinder rebuild kit from the dealer or parts store and do it yourself.

Yes itis. Having owned 2 1992 Si hatches, I can tell you that both had an O.E 13/16ths m/c on them.

There are some that come with a 7/8ths m/c, but I can't say for certain wether it was only the 1994-1995 with ABS that had that. If it is the 7/8ths with ABS, then forget it because you're still going to be reflaring that rear line to accomodate the fatter ABS fitting neede in the m/c.

My 95 EX (Disk/Drum, No ABS) has a 7/8ths MC.

Sure it is.

You have to buy the appropriate booster and then bend the lines, and then worst of all, double flare the line closest to the fiewall to accept the big-*** ABS fitting. The lines route TOTALLY different on the 1'' m/c, and it looks like **** and the lines are not very strong to begin with, so bending the **** out of them is borderline retarded because if you over bend them and kink and/or break them you're going to be pissed. A friend of mine did the 1''; ITR in his EG and the line bending and refalri g was a ******* pain and it looked like ***.

On the EG, the m/c lines both enter from the driver's side of the m/c and are at a certain angle. The ITR has one enter on the topside of the m/c and the other is on thw rong side too. Ever tried to put an ABS fitting on a non-ABS car's brake lines? It sucks.

**** that.

Nothing is easier than this upgrade - you cannot ask for anything more simple.

awesome find man!
Hit us with an update when you see the thing in action, if you get more insight on needing an upgraded booster or not.

I was dreading the circus it would have been for me to alter the brake lines to fit. Im still new to this, it would not have been pretty, trust me.

Only different is pedal pressure and feel. Less pedal movement the bigger the MC

You'll be bending the **** out of your brakes lines to try and get them to mate up with the 99-00 Si m/c because it looks almost just like the ITR m/c in the way that the lines enter the m/c.
