Does the Civic 2000 EX engine say Vtec?
Sup Everyone!
New to this forum.
I am looking at buying a 2000 Civic EX (2 dr). I was under the impression that the stock engine should say "vtec"? Is this correct?
So far, everything checks out. Just not sure about this and I would like to get a confirmation before signing on the dotted line.

It's VTEC. Go ahead and buy.
And if you're not sure, run the VIN number at carfax.com and it'll say the year, make, and model for free.

why do you care if it has VTEC or not? buy a car for the styling, comfort, reliability, and performance, dont base your purchase on if the cam has two different profiles... 
And yes, all civic EX's from 92 on up have SOHC VTEC

i mean not to sound weird or anything but when dealing with hondas vtec is kind of important to me i mean thats why i own one becase if the motor in it.

FYI - I wasn't asking just so I can show off a vtec. That's not me but I can see how it might sound that way.
I just wanted to make sure I wasn't buying something that had an engine replaced or anything. That was the main concern.

Dude, it was a simple question. Didn't mean to **** anyone off.
Again, Only reason I asked was just to make sure I was getting the original engine with the car. I pulled a CarFax histor and everything checked out.

There are a few ways to check.
One look at teh VIN, it should say EJ8 in it.
Two look at the engine code next to the tranny that should say D16Y8
Three look for the VTEC solenoid. That is on the left side of the head by the distributor. They look like this, obviously the device not the circled number.

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is an electronic and mechanical system in some Honda engines that allows the engine to have multiple camshafts. VTEC engines have an extra intake cam with its own rocker, which follows this cam. The profile on this cam keeps the intake valve open longer than the other cam profile. At low engine speeds, this rocker is not connected to any valves. At high engine speeds, a piston locks the extra rocker to the two rockers that control the two intake valves.
Some cars use a device that can advance the valve timing. This does not keep the valves open longer; instead, it opens them later and closes them later. This is done by rotating the camshaft ahead a few degrees. If the intake valves normally open at 10 degrees before top dead center (TDC) and close at 190 degrees after TDC, the total duration is 200 degrees. The opening and closing times can be shifted using a mechanism that rotates the cam ahead a little as it spins. So the valve might open at 10 degrees after TDC and close at 210 degrees after TDC. Closing the valve 20 degrees later is good, but it would be better to be able to increase the duration that the intake valve is open.
the only problem i have with that pic is that even with SOHC VTEC, its not just the intake valve that changes profile, its both the exhaust and the intake valve, they just change together and are on the same size grind/profile, DOHC vtec is better only because the Intake and exhaust have been tuned seperately

Do you think posting this cleans up what you were doing previously...we all know you were trying to dogg him because he was a newbie...and he mentioned previously he knew what vtec was...this is just a pathetic way to change the subject...His question was if his car had vtec..not what vtec was....

Tell me in this picture where you see the VTEC cam lobe for the exhaust in the SOHC.
Found a better pic.
Now see what a DOHC w/VTEC looks like. Both cams have a middle lobe while the SOHC only has the middle lobe on the Intake.
