Just asking a question. Searched also and I didn't find any result.

Was looking at a car to buy and a kid off Craigslist said he had a 96 Honda Civic CX/DX (He didn't even know what model), and he said original miles are 122,XXX. I saw that it was on the cluster and asked him did he replace it?

He said "SOME" CX/DX came equipped with the EX .

Can anyone verify this ?

Does the guage cluster have a tach? Is that why you're asking?

I'd say no the 96 Civic hatch did not come from the FACTORY with an ex-spec guage cluster. If it's got a tach he swapped it in.

BTW:

I can't fault the guy for not knowing the CX/DX thing as the differences were not as obvious on the 96 model as they were on the 92-95 models.

Yeah, it's hard to tell the differences, but he should've known since the title of the car was in his name.

CX vs DX - punch in the VIN into http://www.carfax.com - the free portion will tell you which it is.

the red line on the tach should tell you what's what.
EX = 6900-7000
DX/LX/CX = 6500-6600

DX came with rear wiper and color-matched spoiler. CX did not.

Canadian '96 - '00 DX hatchbacks came with a tach (actually for at least '96 you could get an option package on the CX that also gave you the tach among other things) US hatchbacks never came with a factory tach though.

I am fairly certain that the addition of a gauge cluster with a tach was a dealer option for all unequipped models 92-00. And there were many other options as well.
