d16y5 (hx) tranny went bad is a ls/vtec good tranny what all is needed
I have a 97 civic HX model and the tranny went out and i was wondering what all would be needed to put a ls/vtec tranny into it such as tranny ecu axels would i need anything else. I plan to put a ls engine in the future thats why decided to go with that tranny o and its an automatic also.
Is this a good choice or should i just look for an EX tranny and what all would be needed with that any suggestions are welcome im open to hearing different suggestions and experiance thanks

first off all the the B series tranny (LS,GS,GSR,CRV) will not fit a D series motor(CX,DX,EX,SI,LX,HX)

or just get the b series motor with the tranny. if you stay d series you want an 96-00 ex tranny.

That and there is no such thing as an LS/VTEC tranny.
If you plan to do a LS swap in the future just pick it all up now and save yourself some money. Don't get a Honda automatic if you plan on modding your car very much IMHO.

Thanks for the advice but i think i have decided to just go with the EX tranny cause i have to get it running quick and dont have the money for a full b swap then if i decide to make it run faster then 18's then ill get a turbo kit but it will be mostly for show cause ill have my bike for speed if i want it
so what all is needed for the tranny swap ive been told so many different things and i was even told by a honda dealership that its not possible cause the hx has the cvt tranny so if someone knows in detail what all parts i need to get it would help out a lot thanks

ok not to be a dick or anything i didnt ask for the dumb remarks that ive been getting into (if i dont know what im getting into then tell me) its obvious that u cant answer my question so u must not know what im getting into also and ive asked many mechanincs and they all say the same either u need this or that or whats a cvt transmission so i was hoping someone knew a little about it
I never once said that i was going to make it fast its going to be for show and its hard for judges to even look at your engine with a sohc that u cant find much for the aftermarket

Re: d16y5 (bob evans)
you take the hx tranny out and then you put the ex tranny in! damn near everything off the d-series is interchangeable! the hx is built for gas mileage so it has some special gearing to take you a long way for cheap...just swap it out and you should be ok! do a search, those always help!

Re: d16y5 (shepworldwide)
hahahah LS/VTEC transmission....haha that made my ******* day
To the moron: you need a D-series tranny for your D-series...LS/VTEC is a head/block setup, the words "transmission" and "LS/VTEC" have nothing to do with eachother. The two best transmissions for D-series motors are the D16Z6 (92-95 EX)and D16Y8 (96-00 EX). They have identical ratios, but the Y8 has steel shift forks so it is a bit stronger and will probably last longer in the long run. And you have a D-series motor that is after 1992, which means that it is hydraulic and you can only use other hydraulic transmissions from 92+ d-series motors. HOWEVER you have that CVT bullshit so your only option may be another auto 96-00 D16Y5 HX CVT tranny...if thats what the honda dealer says, then listen to them

Now, what I got out of that quote up there is that there isn't much aftermarket stuff for a D series motor. You have it all wrong! There is just as much stuff for a D series as there is for a B series, you just have to know where to look. I'm in the process of building an all motor D and I have yet to run into any problems with find aftermarket parts for my build.
Back to the original post...
A B series trans. will not bolt to your HX motor...
There is no such thing as an LS/VTEC trans...
You'll just be better off finding an HX transmission...

Re: d16y5 (hx) tranny went bad is a ls/vtec good tranny what all is needed (tshaw)
Thanks for those who did help. I have checked wth dealers and all of them are clueless unless i get another hx tranny which thats what im tying to avoid cause for those who dont know which is probally 95 percent of everyone including myself until it went wrong the transmission fluid is suppose to be changed every 15k miles (and if u dont believe me go and check a manual its a 97) so tranny shops have told me that most of them will go out and the price they are to fix is over a 1000 easy and u can pick up a ex one from a junkyard easy for 400

Re: d16y5 (hx) tranny went bad is a ls/vtec good tranny what all is needed (tshaw)
O and another thing i know there i plenty of stuff for sohc but look into the hx and u will realize that there isnt as much stuff for it as other civics and being that i dont care to much for speed i dont want to spend a shitload of money and still get beat by a cavalier and yes i said cavalier i owned one and got a civic cause there was getting to be cavaliers in my town like crazy so i got a civic and id rather ask questions on jbody.org cause they arent all dicks (expect for a few of u that have helped)

Re: (Ricey McRicerton)
TSAW, Sup!!...dont mind those who flames on you for asking a noob question...something it take awhile for someone whos new to Hondas to learn all the Engine and Tranny codes, espeacially if you are not too fimilar with them and post qestion here...Because most of them have been ask alot of time already!! You can try search first or...risk getting flames at...but let me answere you quetion clearly for you...
First things first...Different engine serie have different tranny..therefore if you have a HX which came with a D-serie motor from stock...so...you can could only use a D-series Transmission. Any D-series motor cant mate to any D-series Tranny such as EX,LX,DX,VX, and soch SI.
As for any B-series motor, any B-series motor will mate to any B-series tranny suck as GSR,LS,Integra and Civic type R, CRV,doch SI...basically any car with a B-series motor.
And...onto your question about performance parts for you car,..there are alot of performance parts for your HX, but unfortunately the HX model Civic from stock is not the performance trend model...you dont get much power or speed with the stock HX motor....thats why most people here swap to a bigger/better B-series motor. Try search and you will see that most people with a B-series motor ran good 1/4 mile time at the track and yet still enjoy making it to go faster!!
If you dont want a slow car from stock,..Dont get one with a Automatic tranny...better yet avoid those low trend level, as it goes for Civic line up...upper level trend to lower trend,...EX,LX,DX,HX,VX...so basically any model from DX is cosider weaker due to a lower HP motor from stock. HX and VX model are more of a Mile Per Gallion (MPG) vehicle, they are design to sniff gas fume rather than burn fuel. Unless you swap MOTOR..huge differences!!

I assume you are talking to Dustin. He'll be the first to tell you that his car is slow and busted. He's one smart dude though.
