CEL Light?? 96 hatch with gsr swap
The check engine light is on in my hatch and has been since I swapped in the motor. I have finally gotten down to replacing all the sensors. However the CEL is still on, my friend who has a program to check the obd2 ecu says that it is a code for some sort of fuel evaporator?? In other words there is a certain sensor on the 97 gsr at the gas tank that the 96 cx hatch does not have. Is this what is causing the light?? Any help would be appreciated, the car seems to run great and has since the swap has been done..

That code could still mean numerous things.
Usually it's on if you don't tighten the gas cap 3 clicks, but basically it's telling you that you might have a fuel leak somewhere - usually the tank itself though.
If I was at work I could check the flow charts in the Honda book and try to help narrow it down for you.
I'm sure I could help more when I get back to the shop on Monday.
Exactly what was the code? The actual number like P0743, etc.

Re: CEL Light?? 96 hatch with gsr swap (B18C5-EH2)
Anyone have any suggestions? IS there some sort of sensor near the gas tank that the gsr has that my 96 cx does not have? Also how can I check the codes myself. I have a program for my laptop, I just need a cable to be able to read the codes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance James

Re: CEL Light?? 96 hatch with gsr swap (fowler)
yes I believe that the ecu I am running is from a 97+ gsr. I know for a fact that it is an obd2 ecu, I can check tommorow on whick one. So by converting to an obd1 ecu or getting a 96 gsr ecu for my 97 gsr motor and 96cx I can rid myself of the check engine light? Thanks in advance.

After fix whatever your ECU was throwin the code for, I would go ahead and reset the ECU. Just disconect the battery for a few min. I Heck, it worked for me and my 02 sensor! Even after i swapped it out it was throwing code 41s (primary 02) so I restet her and she was happy. Rick

I have had friends that had this same problem.
From what I understand, 97+ (maybe it's 98+) have a sensor on the fuel tank that some civics don't have. I'm not quite sure what year civics, but everyone that I know who have had this problem have 96 civics. Anyways, they don't have the sensor, so the ecu is looking for something that isn't there. Thus, you get a code.
Find out for sure what year ecu you have. But, the easiest fix would be to get an ecu jumper and run an OBD 1 ecu.

a friend of mine gets a similar problem, its code 91 (fuel tank pressure). its a 96 hatch with what we believe to be a 96 gsr p72. From what people have told me, to fix it you either need to swap gas tanks with a civic ex for the problem to be fixed. But i believe that it can be done easier by adding in the sensor from under your rear seat(we have yet to try this). Sorry if this info isn't too helpful but its something + a bump. Good luck
