Default Car is dead, Blowing Fuse!

I need some serious help here guys:

Car: 96 Civic Coupe Dx
Motor: 96 GSR
ECU: HONDATA P28 coverted thru conversion harness

heres what happened:
I was driving on the hw two days ago when all of a sudden car just died, i thought it was my kill switch but after bypassing it - NOTHING

Then i checked my fuses, The fuse #44 under the hood which is the FI E/M (PGM-FI main relay, Fuel injector relay) was blown, so i changed it and as soon as the key was put in to the on position BOOM, CRACK, POP it blows!

So i was told about the main relay: switched it out, blows the fuse
Changed out ECU: blew the Fuse
Put my main relay and ecu into another car, Worked fine.
Jumped the fuel pump, Primed so its not seized
W/ main relay off turned the key with fuse in and test lighted the ignition: turned on so theres no short there

Im runing out of ideas, so plz H-T i need you more than EVER

Cliff Notes: Car dies, change blow fuse, keeps blowing, check ignition main relay, ecu and fuel pump all seem fine, whats next?

I had the same problem a couple years ago. I could not find the problem either. I ended up rewiring everything. It sucked. I still havn't found the problem, if you find out what is causing it, please let me know too.

I ended up running a wire to each O2 sensor, injectors, fuel pump, ign main relay, EVAP and I think TPS, but Im not 100% which sensors I ended up having to wire together. If you run out of options and need to know which sensors and wires to wire together let know. I think I can find my notes and check what I had to wire.

its just weird because the car has been running fine since i did the swap in May, i took it to the track ran it hard plenty of times and never no prob and now poof! out of nowhere just died.

A buddy of mine told me to check all my sensors but would a sensor thats not related to the main relay affect it and cause the short there?

^^^^ any info possible would be great bro, thanx!

I remember my nephew's main relay kept blowing for no apparent reason, he found something that was grounding off which was his power wire to his amp, so I'm just wondering if something is grounding off and making your main relay blow. I don't know though, just a thought.

I didn't mess with my car for a few months before it blew. One day I was driving to work it died on me. It was raining not sure if that had anything to do with it. I thought is was the timing belt until I found the fuse blown.

I read somewhere that if a sensor is shorted out, it can cause it to blow this fuse. I'm not sure which sensors, but there is a few sensors wired to that fuse. Check the wire schematic

Was his main relay itself blowing? My fuse for it is the only thing blowing and i dont have an amp just a radio, and an alarm

I was just talking to a buddy of mine and he said to check the IACV which is connected i think and to also check the injectors since it is also the fuse for the fuel injector relay... I ran out of fuses so tomorrow i gotta buy more!

I gotta check my helms for more info but as of so far i havent found much!

THanx guys keep it coming!

blown fuse means bad load device.

Something in one of your circuts is letiing to much of the voltage through without resistance.. check your harness and make sure you didnt accidentaly drive a screw into the harness. Happens more than you would think

Good info only discrepancy is that i have not touched the wiring since i dropped in the motor in may, there has to be a short somewhere and i have to find that BITCH!

Check for a short or anything that may have worked itself loose. Its not at all possible you may have touched something and forgot about it?

the fuel pump pulls power from fuse #13 not 44.

#44 supplies power to the ECU, AICV and injectors through the yel/blk wire.
Was it raining while you were driving when it died?
Are there any wires that looks pinched, rubbed on or generally messed up?

Here's what I'd do. buy a pack of fuses. (5+)
put in a new fuse, unplug the ECU and conversion harness.
turn on the ignition. blown fuse?(1)
(1a)if it does then there is a wiring problem with the yel/blk wire from the main relay to the engine, unplug the AICV and injectors and try again.
(1b)If it doesn't then the problem is with your conversion harness or the ECU. Try an OBD2A ECU. regardless if it lights the CEL, does it blow the fuse?(2)
(2a)if yes then you have a wiring problem with something the ECU supplies power/ground to. I'd guess the O2 heater.
(2b)If it doesn't then it's the conversions harness or your P28.
Try a different OBD1 ECU, or try your OBD2A-OBD1 harness in another OBD2A civic.

Since the fuse is blowing as soon as you turn the key to run, I would defintiely suspect a wire that is shorted to ground.

As was mentioned, trace the YE/BK wire. Since it didn't do this right away, I would look at a wiring harness that has been either melted through or rubbed through. Do you have a grommet at the firewall? That is a common spot for wiring to rub. Also, check routing along your cylinder head, especially since the wiring is for the injectors.

To find the short to ground, unplug all of the connections on that circuit, connect your positive lead to each YE/BK terminal, and the negative test lead to battery (-). You should have infinite resistance to ground. If you have continuity, trace along that branch of the circuit and you should find the problem.

I had a similar problem but this was mine.. On My GS-R motor I installed a skunk 2 intake manifold and had to extend the wire for the IAC valve. Then 2 years later the tape I put went down exposing the two wires so they would touch and keep blowing the fuse. But the funny thing about mine was I would put a new fuse in it and the car would start and rev fine, but when you pop the clutch hard the engine would move and make the wires touch and pop the fuse. That had me going crazy. I did all the above you did also just to find out later what it was...

So check so exposed wires some where, Alarm, Radio, Vafc, Wiring Harness, ETC.

OK guys, heres an update:

Unplugged ECU and conversion harness, tested it: Blew Fuse
Changed fuse
Unplugged IACV and Fuel injector wires: Blew Fuse
Changed fuse
Found some cut/ripped wires new my alarm reattached: Blew fuse
Changed fuse
Disconnected my Only o2 sensor: Blew fuse

So now what are my options? im thinking if worse comes to worse i will redo all the connections coming out of the ecu to my motor

But next thing i think im going to do is check and redo the grounds on my car, all 3 (VC, Thermostat housing, and tranny)

Any more suggestions? you guys have been great so far!

that right there eliminated any possibility that it's the ECU doing it.
it has to be one of the yel/blk wires from the main relay to the plugs on the sensors. It either got pinched or rubbed on the chassis till it wore through the insulation.
best bet, take a multi-meter, attach positive lead to the yel/blk wire at the main relay, attach the negative lead to ground. Set meter to Ohms, observe that the meter says 0ohms, wiggle/twist/move/et wires from the main relay to the firewall, then the ones from the firewall to the engine till the meter stops saying 0ohms.
when it stops saying 0ohms that's the area of the problem.

also, since you found some ripped/cut wires all ready, keep looking for more....

Car turned on but i have no idea why...........

Put in another main relay and it turned on, but then i put mine in and then it also turned on...

tomorrow i will retape as many things that i can turn it on and then retest take it for a drive, drive it hard hit bumps to see if problem happens again, lets pray it doesnt....

Thanx again to everyone~

here's a little gift for you... all the wires, what they do and where they go from the main relay. 96-98 civic specific.

wht/blk - constant power - under hood fuse box - fuse 44(FI E/M-15A)
yel/grn - 12V in run or start - under dash fuse box - fuse 13(Fuel Pump-15A)
black - ground - G101(on thermostat housing)
yel/blk - 12V from yel/grn in Run or Start - to ECU, injectors & AICV.
blu/wht - 12V in start - under dash fuse box - fuse 31(Starter Signal-7.5A)
grn/yel - ground when fuel pump should be on - from ECU A16
yel/grn - fuel pump - 12V from yel/grn when grn/yel=gnd

hopefully that helps some how.
