I probably have the worst driving record of anyone on this site. I bought myself a Valentine 1 and have only had 2 tickets in a year. Thats REALLY REALLY GOOD for me. The only time I have been pulled over was because of a broken tail light, and a officer checking up on me.

The Valentine 1 had paid for itself so many times, I lost count. If for some reason I lost mine, or it broke, I would buy it again, and pay the extra $50 or whatever for next day shipping. It worth it to spend more money, because it is THE BEST.

Ask yourself this....Is NOT spend $400 now worth spending $400 or more later? PLUS if you buy another detector, your spending the much more + the $400

Being good and saving for a Valentine 1......1 month (at most) + $400
Getting the warm fuzzy feeling when you drive by the first cop....priceless
Getting the warm fuzzy feeling when you drive by the next cop...Orgasmic!!
Valentine 1
Anything else

BDC, have you tested each of the top 3 yourself? Don't take the word of that site you quoted - I read their "SHOOTOUT", and if you read carefully, you can see that they're biased against the V1. Car and Driver, on the other hand, is a nationally respected source. Has Consumer Reports done a study on them?

I own a V1. I can say that a cop has NEVER snuck up on me with any kind of radar. Not even POP. I credit this to the arrow system that the V1 has. Here's my latest run-in with POP.

For those of you who live in the Orlando area, be careful going through Celebration, they love POP there. I was going down the main road in Celebration, I think the speed limit is 40, and I was doing about 55. I had two cars about 1/2 mile ahead of me. Going into an S curve, I got a level 2 alert with an ahead arrow. I noticed that I didn't pass the source of the radar.... (if you go by an auto door opener it goes from front, to side, to back)... it just disappeared. Coming out of the S-curve my detector went crazy.. but it wasn't the usual climb from 1-max.. it just went from totally silent to MAX. I would have been screwed without the people ahead of me, but I'm not dumb enough to speed without someone ahead of me.

Laser is a totally different story. The other day I passed a trooper sitting in the median (on Palm Parkway by the hospital for you Orlando-ians). He was clocking cars going in the opposite direction. I never got an alert going by him, and so I rode up about 1/2 mile and made a u-turn. Coming back it *seemed* like he clocked 2 cars ahead of me, and then me. I picked up all 3 emissions, but nothing before or after that. If I had been speeding by cars with no one in front of me, I'd have been fucked.

If you want total coverage, get a V1/Escort/Bel and get a laser jammer. The site that BDC referenced says that the Escort Shifter ZR3 is the best, but in the review of it, it says "If you want better protection against lasers, most likely you'll have to buy a judge." Sounds sales-pitchy to me.

Summary: V1 is great for radar and laser, but great for laser is probably not good enough. If you want to speed, get a laser jammer as well.

Also, I want to add something - I speed like crazy at night - when troopers are likely to be sitting in their cars, using radar, not laser. I've never seen a cop using laser at night, have any of you? During the day I do about 10 over, because that's normally the limit of what I can do without getting a ticket.

Oh, and do not mistake my last post as a "V1 is the best!" post. I haven't tried the others, but the V1 is not an overpriced piece of junk at all.

Not true at all, nearly every radar detector has 360 degree coverage. Now as you said the V1 has the arrows, and as far as I know is the only one that shows you what direction the signal is coming from. Which the people that I know that have them say it is a wonderful feature.

And something that was not mentioned that I think is important. How and where you mount the detector. the best spot is as high up on the windshield as possible. Radar detectors have to 'see' the signal, they are not like radios. So mounting them on the dash can hamper the potential of your detector because of obstruction. Aslo don't do what I always see with a lot of cobra radar detectors, mount the thing PARALLEL to the ground, don't have it hanging at a 45 degree angle off of your windshield. There are not many aircraft checking your speed with radar.

FYI I have a bel 916, it is not a top of the line one, but it has saved me. The suction mount that I have (not the same one mentioned in one of the posts above) is one of the best I have seen, very very sturdy.

Aslo I live in Indiana, and I have never had any problems with cops seeing my detector. I do not have tinted windows, and the two times I have gotten pulled over it was in plain view for the cop to see and I got only warnings both times.

Both of these are very important. The parallelity moreso, I'd say. So many bozos have their detectors hanging at a 45 degree angle, it's ridiculous. Mounting high is even more important in my car, an eg hatch, because the back window can only be seen through with a high mounting location. Be sure to avoid making the detector look through the tint strip though.
