Default b16a2 acting up near vtec

So I had a healthy b16 in my ek. Bought a head an had Sk2 springs an retainers put in along with stage 2 blox cams off Craigslist.

Installed the head got it running went on a test drive babied it for like 30 miles then went to hit vtec with the throttle to the floor an it starts cutting out. Vtec engages but it sputters an sounds horrible.. it feels strong before 4k and its torquy it went up a hill near my house in 5th as usual so its not unusual their. I've tried different ecu's I reused my dizzy vtec solinoid an injectors.

Any ideas? Timings on and no cel's or anything... I'm stumped tried adjusting the timing. An double check every plug. Its killing me haha

I've got the same issue. I've been researching and there are several examples of folks who swapped in new cams, had this issue, tried different things to remedy it and then decided to replace the aftermarket cams for oem's and have everything return to normal.

after I replaced my cams with s2t2's I had this issue on the dyno. my tuner thought it could be caused by exhaust restriction caused by the fat dent in one of the runners in my header. He just about almost tuned the glitch out. I had no issues until one day I had my muffler replaced. The moron exhasut guy replaced my 2.5" muffler with a 2.25" (The whole exhaust, cat, resonator, collector was 2.5"). the first time it crosse dinto vtec after that i had that issue.

I tracked the car not long after that and all day dealt with the annoying poppoppopop at vtec cross over... it sounds painful especially when feathering to full throttle around turns between 5500-6000rpms. it definately held some of my straitline speed back.

So i recently had the 2.25" muffler replaced with a 3" magnaflo and the rough crossover is almost gone. I've gotten on it several times and only had that issue once and it was not nearly as bad as it was before. I will be back to the tuner soon to see if he can tune it out.

Of all the research ive done, i havent found a single definitive answer but i have read several times about folks who reverted to stock cams. that wasn's a solution i wanted to consider. I know it seems unlikley that exhaust restriction would cause this but i have a hunch that it is related, especially since my issues are almost clear.

Check the valve lash for the vtec lobes. Sounds like you may be shifting to improperly lashed valves when VTEC cuts in.... Could also be improperly gapped plugs... Please let me know what the solution is.

you can't set the valvelash between the vtec lobes and the regular lobes independently. you set the valvelash period. let us know if the valve adjustment does it.

Defo check the valve lash clearances. I'm assuming you have the clearance specifications for the new cams?

come on people..
he needs to get it tuned if he is using rougher camshafts..
u just cant slap on stage 2's or 3's and expect it to run without problems..
