I just replaced the cap and rotor on my 93 DX hatch and now it won't start! I cranks but it won't turn over! I've done everything i can think of. Any ideas?

were you having starting problem before you changed the cap and rotor?

no it was just running kinda rough. so i decided to do a little tune up.

when was the last time the timing belt was changed?

sounds like you got more than a couple plug wires mixed up.

not much else you can screw up doing that job.

not a clue. i bought the car used and they had no service records for it.

I know!! I've done it many times before and that's why i don' understand what's going on!!

Firing order should be 1 3 4 2 right?

I'd say u got ur pattern mixed up. The plug on the top of the rotor when ur looking down at it is #1 and goes in the far right hole on the engine. Then the next one down in clockwise rotation is #3 which goes in the 2 hole from the left, then #4 in the far left hole, and last #2 in the third hole from the left. If your pattern is right and it still wont start check your distributer and/or make sure your timing belt is tight. If its come loose then your timing is off.

Btw the firing order on the cap is 1-3-4-2 goinf clockwise and 4-3-2-1 on the engine.

took everything apart and put it back together and still nothing

did you take the dizzy off when you replaced everything, if so you may be 180* off

If you feel brave u can take ur distributer off and check the teeth. You could have a broken tooth which could have caused ur rough idle before the tune up. But if u do this make sure u put it in EXACTLY how u took it out because again u could end up 180 degrees off.

There are no gear teeth on the distributor it has a one way key on it. Do you have spark? check and make sure all the wires inside the dist are still connected. They get brittle and can brake off. If all that checks okay then test your coil pack. there are several right ups on here about testing it or if you have a friend with a honda you could try swapping his in

"teeth" meaning the 2 prongs on the key... same thing.

Im unclear on what u mean but "cranks but doesnt turn over". If all u hear is the starter ticking check ur battery and batt cable. If it's turning over but wont fire then as instructor74 said check ur wires and coil pack.

sounds like u have plug #1 on #4 but if not put the old cap back on to see if it has anything to do with that, just back step your steps

If the distributor was 180 off it wouldn't go back in right and not sit flush against the head. It is designed to only go in one way. If you look close the two little "teeth" that go into the cam are sized differently so that there is only one way to install it.

why dont you check for fuel and spark.

also, whats your check engine light doing. normal, turn the key on, check engine light on for a second and goes off or what???

Do the plug wires and plugs if you're going to go that far into a tune up to eliminate those as a potential problem Maybe the ignition coil inside the distributor went bad...that or you bumped a wire off the inside of the distributor when you took off the cap and rotor?

Ok so we tested coil with a volt meter and it tests at 12 Volts. Then we put everything back together and test to see if we were getting spark with a timing light and nothing. So for some reason the current is not getting from the coil to the plug wires

Make certain that you didnt knock off the spring on the coil prong inside the cap. I've lost a couple of these in the past. If the spring is missing then ur not getting any power to the wires at all.
