99 Civic si - Speedo crazy
Hey everyone, so I've come across the irratic speedo problem on my 99 si with 127k. Wen I turn the key on,it will either jus bump up n down real fast or bump up to 20 mph and stay their, so I unplugged the vss and same problem still exists,I haven't had time to go more in depth but I do notice my idle is higher wen the vss is plugged in but that happens wen the speedo goes in and out of working.

Usually when that happens to me its because there is water in the speedo plug.
My car used to have a coolant leak that would sometimes spray there.
Check your speedo and see if you find any water in the plug.
I blew mine out with a can of air and left it off during a dry day and it didn't happen again.

Re: Em1 - will the vss from any other Civics work?
Yes! 100% yes. You can use one from a sohc motor (must be from a manual and must be a hydro tranny). All you have to do is remove the small cotter pin from each VSS, and then install your EM1 gear from end of vss onto the SOHC one! Reinstall cotter pin, install into your vehicle, and hit the road!
I have done this 156734 bajillion times, so trust me... it works!
Good luck to ya, hope you enjoy your new working vss!

re: 99 Civic si - Speedo crazy
This is gonna sound weird, but that happens to my 94 Honda when my battery is old and not giving enough volts/amps when starting the car.
How old is your battery?
If you want you can just go to a shop and get the battery tested.
Just wanted to give my 1 cents of input as this exact problem happened to me a few times.Use it, don't use it.It's your choice.

Tap on the speedo window, while moving.
Mine acts stupid, or gets stuck at a certain speed.
I tap on the window and it goes to where it should be.
Thinking its a bad connection in the dash somewhere.

re: 99 Civic si - Speedo crazy
I have no coolant leaks and I've inspected the harness above the sensor and seems fine. Battery is a couple years old but I did take the cluster aprt ish, popped the needle off, hooked it up and turned the key on and I could see the stem of the needle move so I figured put the needle where it should it would stay at the bottom but no matter wat I did, it went back to the same spot so I feel the speedo cluster itself is no good
