Default 98 Civic D16Y7 Backfiring and bogging

I have a stock 98 civic hatch. The car is bogging and backfiring at low RPMs and it wont go anywhere. When I give it gas it just backfires and bogs down. I haven't driven my car because of this because I know i'll block traffic!

Symptoms:

The bogging and backfiring is REALLY BAD!

My interior instruments also blinks as if I'm losing power.

I've had a code 45 CEL before (running too rich or lean) but it's been off now.

I've read that it could be a number of things dying such as; fuel pump, injectors, or o2 sensor related from this code 45 CEL.

The car was bogging from before when I would do WOT but no code. Then one day it just popped the code 45 and thats when it started to bog/backfire really bad.

The car runs OK on cold starts but at normal operating temps, it will just bog and backfire.

Can't get it past 2k...bogging and backfiring (popping sounds from engine bay).

11-24-04
I can't start my car today, it will just crank over and over again but it won't start.

Things replaced:

Fuel filter
I replaced the Cat/Header and the primary o2 sensor.
My spark plugs are pretty black but these plugs are relatively new.
Replaced dist. cap & rotor.
Oil change
added a bottle of B-12 Chemtool (same as Seafoam)
Ignition coil
New spark plug wires

PLEASE HELP!!

Thank you

My car also takes at least 2 cranks to start in the morning. It takes about 3 or 4 now...

It's quite odd because I threw a code 45 (running too rich or too lean) and so I redid my timing, made sure it was at 16BTDC, and changed the o2 sensor.

After that it started bogging and backfiring. So I changed the header/cat and it's still bogging.

It ran well before the code 45 came up.

I really don't know what to tell you other than I'm having similar problems with my 98 DX coupe with a D16Y7. Mines not backfiring though, but I've been experiencing it bogging down, and even stalling out at times.

I'm going to be changing the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, and maybe mess with the idle, and see if that helps.

Sigh.

I just test drove it again and I can't get it past 2k. Just keeps stuttering through with backfires. It also idles rough probably below 400 or 300 RPMs.

Seems like it'll move with less load on the motor so I had to feather the clutch all the way down my neighborhood.

Sounds like its spark related since your running soo rich. checked your plug wires yet? Was there any oil on the spark plugs you pulled out of the car?

I've looked at my plug wires and they look fine but then again I'm not sure what bad ones look like? Are they supposed to fall apart...?

There aren't any oil leakage in the spark plugs.

Bump for any other suggestions I could try tomorrow.

Tomorrow I'm going to try:

new spark plug wires
new spark plugs
gap them properly to 1.1mm
and replace my coil ignitor with a known working one.

I was thinking that earlier but that wouldn't make any sense since I'm probably running rich (from the looks of the plugs).

Although, my car seems to have gone without sputtering much when the timing is advanced (at startup).

I believe it was advanced past the last mark before I adjusted it back to 16.

and it did run fine before other than throwing the code?? id say play with the timing a little run it a day or two and then fine tune it so the cel doensnt come on cause a code is better than no car

I'll go ahead and advance the timing tomorrow to the last mark and see if it'll stop some of the bogging or backfiring. As of right now, the car will not go any faster than 5mph unless I feather the clutch all the way.

When it was running at the advanced timing degree, there were no codes. I just had an itching to check the timing and just happens that I discovered it was running rich.

I recalibrated to 16 and ran that for a good while before the 45 CEL code popped.

How's your fuel pressure??? Maybe run some injector cleaner through the fuel system. Check the fuel filter as well to make sure that it's not all clogged up.

Oh I forgot to mention the fuel filter was recently replaced. I don't know about my fuel pressure...

Someone mentioned via PM to me that they had the same problem remedied by replacing their corroded map sensor connector.

Any input on this?
