97 civic with oil leak - which torque specs to tighten the head? 1.5? or 1.6?
I recently rebuilt a 97 civic and the engine code was scratched off of it, come to find out its a 1.5l not a 1.6l it has a 1.6 head on it though, which torque specs should I use to tighten the head? 1.5? or 1.6??? And are they even compatible? Thank you in advance for the help.

Re: 97 civic nightmare
so is the block stamp still readable ? the number on the trans housing would be for the tranny not the block. the head is a 96 EX D16Y8 Auto------P2J-2 stamped.

The engine code on the front plate of the motor is completely gone, Ithink that whoever had the car last blew the original 1.6 in it up and put a 1.5 in cuz it was cheaper? Or that was just more available? And scratched the numbers off because this thing didn't even have a 1.5 option.

Re: 97 civic nightmare
I ordered bearings and rings from the machine shop and they were way to big brought the block to them and they mic'd all the rods and crank and matched them up in their book and said they were messurments off a late 80's to early 90's 1.5, and after Iput it all back together it had an oil leak from the front passenger side of the head gasket..... which is baffling. So Iwas wondering if the head bolts may needed to be torqued to 1.5 stats instead of 1.6.......

Ok so Ifinally got around to putting this new head gasket on it, and low and behold, its leaking oil again.......... I'm beginning to think the head and block are not compatibale even though the gasket lines up on both........

I would junk it and grab another motor. If you do not know what you have it is not worth dealing with.

Re: 97 civic nightmare
Did you have the head milled, and the block decked? Are you using the original studs, or new ones? Are you following proper torque sequence and pattern? A D is a D, it doesn't matter if it's a 1.5 or a 1.6. People put Y8 heads on D15 blocks all the time. Your oil leak sounds like user error. The scratched off identification, on the other hand, sounds sketchy as hell. The usual reason for scratching off that identifying information is because it's a stolen motor.

The head and block both have been to the machine shop and checked out fine, brand new head bolts, sequenced per instructions on all data for a 1.6l head brand new 1.6l head gasket..... I'm all out of ideas everything mechanichal says its fine but something just isn't right here
