I can't commit to any performance numbers until the wheels hit the road. However, the new pack should be about 300lbs less than the last one - it'll still be heavier than the stock Civic though.

We're aiming for at least 100 miles of real world range at highway speed. Stay tuned for the actual test data.

Just curious, what is the throttle cable connected to? Or is there one?
How does the accel pedal work in other words?
.
No throttle cable, just a potentiometer. The resistance of the pot tells the controller how much current to dump into the motor.

tZero Motorsports and AC Propulsion are supporting a Yokohama sponsored EV buggy that is aiming to beat the EV record (currently held by an ACP powered vehicle, naturally). They are using a more powerful motor with gobs more torque. We did some testing out at Buttonwillow Raceway. Here are some pics from the day.

Special thanks to Shane Seneviratne for letting us use his US Racetronics shop and for his support and hospitality. You might know them for their Stargate Worlds team that launched Simona De Silvestro into her IndyCar career. Check them out at www.usracetronics.com

I'll keep you up to date with the happenings over the weekend. We'll get back to the Honda Civic shortly.

I would love to have that thing. Just clean it up and take care of it. Looks like a alot of work went into it when it was built.

Extra! Extra! Ikuo Hanawa beats Pikes Peak record for EVs by almost 1 minute, 20 seconds with new AC Propulsion drive system. The car ran off-the-shelf Yokohama AVID ENVigor street tires and high powered Sanyo Li-ion batteries. More news and pictures to follow...

Very cool . How do you charge the car? How long does it take for it to be fully charged from empty? Can you disclose any info on how the motor works? This is all really interesting. 0mpg ftw!

Ikuo Hanawa drove spectacularly at Pikes Peak to capture the EV record in a time of 13:17.575. He also beat his internal combustion competitors in the Exhibition Class to take top honors. Engineer Buchi made final checks and adjustments. EJ (Ijay) kept the systems cool and provided plenty of entertainment. Mino's Sanyo batteries delivered max power all the way to the summit. The guys from TrackSide Performance did a great job of supporting the effort, getting up at 1AM to drive the rig to the base, service and prepare the vehicle and keep us fed and happy. The results speak for themselves. Expect to see the team back next year with bigger goals than just a record and class win.

Pic3: Checks and final preparations at daybreak

The Power Electronics Unit has a patented integrated charger than can charge at 18kW. This means that you can plug into any socket that supplies 100-240V, 15-80A.

With a standard wall outlet, it could take 30 hours from empty to full charge. An electric dryer outlet can supply enough power to charge in 5 hours while charging from an RV outlet will take as little as 3 hours. A high power 240V, 80A line will charge the car in less than 2 hours.

For reference, the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf have 3.3kW and 6.6kW on-board chargers respectively.

The motor is a 3-phase AC induction motor. It's a well documented design and is too much to address here. Wikipedia has a good explanation. What's unique about our design, however, is the integrated charger that uses the same components for both driving and charging. Tesla Motors licensed this patent for their Roadster.

While the Yokohama team was demonstrating AC Propulsion's ultimate performance on Pikes Peak, Peraves E-Tracer team was demonstrating ultimate efficiency in the Progressive Automotive X-Prize. You can follow their blog here and be sure to vote for car #79:

Here's an update on our progress:

The battery box design is complete and we've received the sheetmetal parts, fasteners, and seals. A couple of our supporters have also delivered parts that are needed for the battery installation:

* Glenair produces many of the power connectors that we use and they have assembled a quick connect cable that includes both optical fiber and copper connections

* ebmpapst supplied two Flatpack blowers that will each pump up to 209 cubic meters per hour (123 cfm) of cooling air through the battery pack. The smaller fan is a standard computer fan for size comparison.
