35k miles on a motor?
i was thinking about buying a b16A from the 88-91 generation civic, from like hmotorsonline or some other website.. what i really dont get is like they claim all their motors or the "average" mileage is 35,000 miles.
lets just say the motor came from a 90, and its 05 now. so 35,000 divide by 15 is like 2,333 miles per year.. i really doubt all the people in japan drive 2300 miles per year. and i dont think all the engines are rebuilt since its all pulled from a car. any ideas?

Re: 35k miles on a motor? (civiccoupe94)
what's the question here?
and you said you "don't think people in Japan drive their cars x,xxx miles a year." - Does that mean you think they drive MORE than x,xxx miles or LESS than x,xxx miles a year?
btw, companies' typical explanation behind the "average of 35,000mi." statements is that most people over there always want to have the latest model vehicles so they get rid of cars once they become a few years old. the other reason company's usually give is that Japan has certain emissions laws, etc. and also strict laws about autobody damage which causes people to just get rid of cars when they crumple a quarterpanel or whatnot.
i don't know. that's what they say.

Re: 35k miles on a motor? (Screwtape:)
I heard it had something to do with a law that a car's engine cant exceed a certain mileage in a given year or something like that. Forcing the owner to sell their car or buy a new motor.
Not 100% sure on this, in fact i could guess that im really wrong, but it makes sence to me.

hmm.. well i just want a decent B16a, but i dont want to get ripped off by buying a 15 year old motor that has like 100k or something and having it to fail after a few years.. since they just pull the motor out, without writing out the mileage on the cluster... just stating it has 35k is kind of fishy...

My d16z6 gets the **** wrung out of it all the time and she has 253,500+ miles on her. I road race with this bitch. I won't lie: I've tried to break it before.
****, 100k on these motors is like the sweet 16.

id be happy with 100k motor
as Archidictus said.. he has a 230+ d16z6..
my d16z6 is at 258k.. and its still running nice i drive the **** out of it atleast once a day.. only thing i dont like about the motor right now is it shakes the car a lil at idle.. but touch the gas to put it at 800rpm+ and it purrs like a kitten
but then again d16z6's have been known to take a good beating (runnin with no oil/etc)

Just out of curiosity.. since you're buying an imported JDM motor.. is there any sort of official documentation that shows exactly how many miles are on the motor? Or does HMO just give you a document they "guarentee to be true" that states the mileage?

Re: (zoops)
It does seem a little fishy, I agree. People in Japan, however, do not keep their cars that long. They have to get them inspected and such every 3 years I think, and it costs them so much to do this, let alone if they have to fix anything, it's more beneficial to them to just buy a new car.
My wife's parents lived there on a military base. They had a 15 year old Camry with ~80,000 miles on it.

i read somewhere the reason why they have low milage is because of their smog law. a car with 30,000 or so is considered to them as 100,000 miles over here on the motor. so they would either have to swap another motor or buy another car. when you think about it also, japan isn't that big of a place so 30,000 mi on a motor is a lot of driving on a small island.

Re: 35k miles on a motor? (Phantastic)
Another reason is that in Japan the per-capita income is high enough that most people with a mid-range job can just go out and buy a brand new car like many of us in the States buy used vehicles.

wait.. if japanese people take off their motors at 35k, then y would they buy honda's and toyota's? i mean honda and toyota are like geared towards reliability... buying a car that can handle 350k and selling it at 35k isnt that bright...
if they sell their car or take out motor every 35k, y not just buy a cheaper imported ford or an american piece of junk there, since they last like 50k before **** happens anyways.

Why would an american car be cheaper than a japanese car in japan? Since honda's and toyotas are produced domestically for them, it is FAR cheaper than any other kind of car. Do you ever wonder why japanese car companies use US labor to build the cars they sell here? Its because the tariffs on their cars are so high (to protect our car companies) that it's cheaper for them to pay our higher labor rates than it is to pay a tariff. Over there, fords and chevys are subject to tariffs the same way.
They have emissions laws that require motors to be tested at close to 35K, and if they fail, they replace them. Their laws are a lot more strict, but the have to be if you consider their population denisty compared to ours. The fact that they don't have nearly as much land also keeps the mileage per year well below what we drive. I got a 93 JDM H22 that was in excellent condition. It was probably sitting in a warehouse for at least 5 years before I got it. Not everyone is a lucky as I was though, because some really are crap. All you can do is order from a reputable company and hope for the best.
